is it safe picc line on the plane and for it to stay for more than 33 weeks for herceptin??

Hi all, Im hoping someone can give suggestions about my dilemma. I have finished all my 6 cycles of chemo last friday...yayyy.... but i'm faced with a new problem, i had to get a picc line inserted for my 5th and 6th cycles because twice the drug leaked into my surrounding tissues around my wrist and damaging my skin tissues and also i was running out of good veins. So 2 days before my last cycle i saw my mo and he said the picc line can come out straight after my last cycle and i can continue the herceptin every 3 weeks by injection but  on the day of my last chemo my onc nurse said that in this case my insurance (btw, im doing all this through private) will not cover treatments by injections, it will only cover treatments if i receive herceptin through canula or i can keep my picc line for another 33 weeks to receive the herceptin. How outragous is that!!!  so my onc nurse said it's up to me what i want to do and she suggested to wait until next week to decide whether i want to keep the picc line or take it out. I asked her what if i want to go through public for the herceptin injections and she said it's going to be difficult since i've been doing everything through private. I must say that i'm a bit disappointed because initially i wanted to do all the treatments through public because I knew through private i would only see the same people everytime and I thought seeing more people the better so you can share knowledge etc but my mo suggested to go through private so i can also help to reduce the load in public hospital and now I have to deal with this problem.

If i chose to keep the picc line, the thing is i have to go overseas from 20th-24th dec and i dont know if its ok having the picc line and being on the plane for 9 hours...I mean can the air pressure have an effect on the picc line??  I have also booked a family holiday from 27th dec-5th Jan down to the south coast and really looking forward to have a swim and do some water activities on the beach with my kids (aged 10, 8 and 6). I dont know if it's safe to go in the water and still having the picc line. Also thinking about having the picc line for another 33 weeks is concerning me.

If i chose to take the picc line out, i dont know if i still have good veins left for 11 rounds of herceptin and maybe several tests here and there in between.

I talked to my wonderful and lovely breast care nurse and she had the same concerns and she said she will try to ask my mo about it. I also told her that it was a bit strange that my mo didnt mention anything to me when i saw him just 2 days before my last chemo...i expect to hear from him first about the changes not from my onc nurse...dont get me wrong my onc nurse is lovely and everything but i need to talk to someone who has some sort of authority to make a decision and tell me exactly what is going on.

I hope i can go through public for the herceptin injections....i think 11 injections would be better than having the picc line for 33 weeks or getting poked and probed looking for a good vein for 11 times!!

2 days before my last chemo i was so happy and  really looking forward to have the last chemo and having my picc line taken out and now i'm faced with this uncertainty  :(

Hoping to hear good news from my lovely breast care nurse on Monday.

Hugs, Liana xx

  • Picc line is out yaayyy.... just came back from hospital... it was absolutely painless.

Yesterday I called my insurance to find out and they said herceptin by injection is not covered it is only covered if administered through IV/picc/port.  So I called my bcn and she said she'll try to discuss this with my mo. 3 hours later she called back and told me that I'll go through public for my herceptin injections and my picc can come out tomorrow. what a relief...so grateful  for my wonderful bcn...makes my life easier. Now I better get everything ready for Christmas...doing a happy dance now ☺☺

  • Hi there @Liana_anna - how did everything go today ?

Did you get some valuable information about being able to go public and avoid that pesky PICC line in for another 33 weeks ?

    Best wishes.
