injections

Had a check up with the oncologist today and apparantly last round my blood count went REALLY low - so the day after my chemo this round I have to give myself an injection - something about neutrophils. has anyone else had to do this. I think the plan is to do this after each chemo. I think it will be hard to do this myself - hate needles at the best of times.

Guess it explains why I was so exhausted after the chemo.

  • My daughter did mine for me and honestly I hate needles but it didn't hurt. The needle is very fine and its done in the fatty tissue.

I did get bone pain from it though, but we are all different the these things effect us all in different ways.

    Good luck

  • I had to do the neulasta injection too. It was a bit confronting to have to inject myself but it didn't really hurt - just a tiny pin prick - and fairly easy to do. It didn't reduce the side effects of chemo for me at all. I still felt like I had the flu for about six days after each chemo plus various other side effects.  But I did not experience the bone pain or joint pain that some people mention in association with this injection.  Hope it goes okay for you. At least you know that your immune system is getting a bit of boost and that you won't be so vulnerable to infections.  Good luck Marg. It's a tough time you're going through but it does pass and life can get back to normal. Janet

  • Hi

I dont think I suffer any side effects from nuelasta as the dull aches could just be from the Chemo itself. As far as whether it helps, I guess it must as my blood count has come in just within the normal range each round except for the haemoglobin.

After the probotic the neutrophil went up 4 times. The chemist recommended the probotic which can increase the immune system. Please check with your onco re appropriateness.

I am ok. My last chemo round is in 2 and a half week. Cant wait.

    Take care.

  • I hope I can be as brave as you - thinking I might book into my GP but might see how big it is. I guess I have to think how this will help me too.

  • I also was terrified of needles and always had to get my best friend to hold my hand whenever I had jags at school. I had neutrophenia after my 1st chemo and was hospitalized for nearly a week. I had a temperature and also had tonsillitis which I hadn't suffered from since I was 7. I don't know how I managed it but I was able to inject myself. It was quite a small needle and it helped that I had to inject into the little pudgy bit on my stomach. Didn't really feel it. I did have to give myself a major pep talk beforehand though. Look after yourself Marg. Xxxx
  • I was thinking I would go to my GP, or I work with our staff health clinic and one of the girls would do it for me. So I will do either of those.  Yeah it must be neulasta as she said 24hrs after chemo. Does it help you? she did say for a short time I might feel like I have the flu - do you get any side affects. might look into a pro biotic - good idea. I am feeling ok and have worked a full week this week, might be a couple of weeks before that happens again.

    HOpe you are going well

    thanks for your info

  • Hi Marg

I have a jab of neulasta 24 hours after each chemo. I am terrified of needles too so I go back to the chemo clinic to get the nurses to administer it. Was also asked to self inject too but I did not think I could. Also, my local gp surgery was prepared to do so if I wanted but as it turn out, there was no need as I got it done back at the chemo clinic.

Btw,  I took some probiotic for bloated tummy  recommended by my onco before my 4th chemo and the wbc and neotrophil improved vastly. This is addition to the jab.

    Hope you are travelling well.
