Hormone therapy side effects and Endorphins

I read on the blog of terrible side effects many on hormone therapy endure.Three major ones seem to be depression, body aches/ pain and insomnia

Many years ago I was fascinated by a group of young blokes seemingly addicted to daily jogging. I was told exercise releases a hormone called endorphins of similar chemical structure to morphine and they enjoyed a “runners high” from jogging.I also noted their ability to deal with pressure seemed to be better possibly due to this hormone.

I also remember a friend suffering post natal depression having exercise as part of her treatment.

I have had a bit of a look today online and there is much about endorphins and their impact on these side effects.

It may not help all but it may help some to explore this option.I think my management of Letrozole is helped by daily walking for an hour.It also helps with my weight which is not entirely the result of Letrozole.

I would never have described myself as an advocate of exercise but I am now. I also found it hard starting out as the terrain near home can be steep and I was far from fit.I also had back pain but found I could walk thru it.

Just a thought.

  • @Romla I know you are so right but I can't bring myself to do any exercise at all other than a little gardening but even that makes me dizzy and I can't bend over or kneel. My feet have horrible bunions, my knees hurt and I can't swim because both shoulders are disabled one from unrepaired ligament damage after a fall caused by long QT syndrome the other from cording. I was wondering about those machines where you lie still while they make your muscles contract. That might work! Still I get around fine and you'd never know what a slug I am from looking at me.

  • The insomnia you suffer from @"Kiwi Angel" must be debilitating making working long hours very hard.I am retired so things are easier plus  sleep has never been an issue mercifully.

I just hope  awareness of endorphins might encourage someone to try exercise to find some relief from the side effects of hormone therapy as it seems to be doing  for me. xo
  • @Romla it’s very true. Exercise does help your mood for sure. I’m a runner, walker, yoga, Pilates person and it has always helped with my mood. Definitely helps produce happy drugs and I have heard many people talk of a “runners high”. The thing for me which prevents me exercising is the fat I have such terrible sleep and if I want to go for a run during the week I have to get up at 5am as I’m at work early and work 4 x 11 hour days. Luckily I’m on my feet most of the day so I regularly do 8-10k steps but I miss having a good nights sleep and waking up full of energy to go for my run. Most days I only manage it when I’m off so I can have an arvo nap  ;).

Hqppy that u have managed to get into some exercise and that it does make u feel happier xooxox
