Hormonal implications

Just wondering if any one has expierenced many hormonal changes after treatment? I know that might sound like a stupid question. But Im 40 years old, had a lupectomy in Oct 2013 folled by 5 weeks of radiation treatment. Just in the last few weeks I cant stop sweating and during the night I wake just drenced!! Wondering if its common to go into early menopause after treatment? And if anyone knows of natural things I might be able to take to help?

Cheers

  • Thanks Jandy for your reply. Im due to see my oncologist next month so will be sure to disscuss things with her. Im yet to go on Tamoxfien and was fortunate not to require chemo..  I guess time will tell whats happening  with me.. I dont mind it...I just like to know whats going on. lol

    Thanks again xx

  • Hi Deanne, no Im not on Tamoxifen or any other hormone therapy yet..and I didnt require chemo. I have cut down caffiene and dont drink alcohol.. I will take your tip on relaxing music and excercise, for the most part ut doesnt bother me if I am in premiture menopause, I just like to understand whats happening to my body...as I guess we all do. I go back to my oncologist next month, perhaps will bring it up with her if it keeps happening.

    You take care too hey..xxx

  • I think it is well known that chemo often puts women into early menopause and the closer you are to natural menopause, the more likely it is. But I've not heard of radiation alone having that effect. Perhaps Deanne is right and it is the shock of diagnosis and treatment that has caused this.

I was 46 when I had chemo and my periods stopped for a while and I had some hot flushes. Then a couple of months later my estrogen levels bounced back and I had a normal period. Then I started taking tamoxifen and I haven't had one since  (14 months ago). So I think in my case menopause was triggered by the combination of chemo and tamoxfien.

The other ladies have given some good advice regarding exercise and eating a healthy diet and minimising alcohol consumption. (Must confess I still have my tea and coffe though.)  I've not had any major issues - just mild hot flushes, mainly at night. I find getting anxious can also trigger one.

I would just be a bit careful regarding so-called natural remedies for menopause symptoms. I'm no expert but it's possible those sorts of products may minic estrogen and therefore promote cancer. I would check with your oncologist before taking anything. Good luck.

  • Hi Erica I'm 37 and I have gone into early menopause through chemo and I believe tamoxifen keeps me there. I get the hot flush and sweats, for some reason they are more noticeable at night. Sometimes I get calf cramping as well. I have only just finished radio treatment so I haven't been taking anything to help with symptoms but I would be interested to know also. Tashx
  • Thanks Robyn, will take that all on board...anything to turn the tap off atm!! lol

  • I have been menopausal for 7 years, and there are plenty of things to do that help.My advice is: only drink cold drinks as it lowers your core temp. Cotton clothing.Sleep with a circulating fan on low speed next to your bed, even in the cold weather.Dont eat spicy food. And probably the most important one,is to exercise ( walking is fine) every day.I don't think I have ever had a hot flush while exercising. As for going into early menopause,I can't say,so maybe good idea to check with your doctor.Cheers xoxRobyn
