Holiday after treatment finishes?

Hi ladies,

It's still a long road until I finish my treatment, looking at early February 2017 (chemo & radiotherapy) ...and I need something to look forward to.

Some friends and family have suggested how about a holiday after all the treatments have finished.  I wonder how realistic it is?  Has anyone planned a holiday afterwards and thoroughly enjoyed it?  I'm bit concerned about whether I'll feel very fatigued or what if I need medical attention while I'm on holidays?

My husband is thinking about an overseas a destination eg Hawaii and just stay at a resort.  We have 2 young kids though (will be 1 and 3 by then) so not sure how relaxing it would be.  Is it worth even contemplating an overseas trip shortly afterwards?  Or would a closer holiday destination is better such as somewhere with a few hours of drive or within Australia but take a domestic flight?

Any experiences or advice is welcome, thanks a lot!

Tingy

  • Hi I went away after I had finished all my treatment. I went to Hawaii  (chemo. mastectomy, reconstruction and 12 months of herceptin) I needed to celebrate ending of active treatment as it was tough. I didn't have small children to think of only a  husband The otis program might work for you and the kids and husband, I do think you need to have some sort of break. We are all different do what is right for you and your family take care xx

  • O think that a holiday as such sounds fantastic but one close to home and ideally someolace where you really can relax and recharge the batteries...

And not in the initial month post treatment (and if you coul find someone to look after the kids for you for a few days it would be ideal as you will really need rest for yourself)...

Inhave only finished chemo 3.5 weeks ago and my chemo was shorter than most as only had 4 AC and the last one was debilitating as was not able to walk more than 15 to 20 steps without collapsong and habing the crawl back to the sofa for just about full 3 weeks. Cardiologist was sure it was due to immune system being wiped and hart having to oump blood 4 times harder as it was 'thinned out' and not enough oxygen or food for the body so walking to my body was equivalent for running 10flights of stairs...

Also got severe trush/candida recurrence yet again all.over the body internally and externally which they reckon even tbough on max dose of both tablets and creams will take frw more weeks to calm down so while the beart, fatigue and trysb on the mend my radiation had been pushed back few weeks as they reckon radiation alone is enough to wipe you out and fatigue you plus severely affect the immune system...

Not saying this to scare you as while.horrible when happening those sideffects will pass and as soon you get them behind you they are quickly kind of forgotten or not distressing you at least but you really want to be in Oz while recovering as if things you wrong you have great care and if they are going well at least you are not adding the exhaustion of a long trip, anxiety over fascilities and childcare...

Have hubby research a great relaxing holiday locally - someplace luxurious and quiet and relaxong ad heaps if such places locally where you can get to with less fuss and to and recouperate and recharge batteries and if God forbid some weird 'dormant' sideffect was to hit at least you are 'home' and anxiety.

When my radiation is done and burn wounds do heal (as my radiation will be 9 weeks so I know they will be unavoidable) I definitely plan to go someplace quiet and tranquill where there is no hussle and bustle for a week at least. Thinking of inland maybe - a nice mountain or farm holiday with plenty of fresh air and nothing to do other than watching grass grow or leaves dance in the wind...

Even consideeing a 5 star health retreat I went to years ago where you do nothing other than rest, eat super healthy delicious detoxing food, have massages and various therapies and just rest recouperate and ennoy the tranquillity...

Reckon we all need at least a week of doing nothing other than taking it easy and being spoiled when all is done...

    Hugs

    Jel.

  • You'll love it and it does help to be away from constant medical appointments

  • Oh thats good to know! Enquiries I made and friends made unfortunately werent weekends. Maybe it depends where you go? Certainly sounds like a great idea, and I did want to try it. I would only be able to do it now anyway, as was very ill through Chemo. So looking forward to finally getting away...much needed break! Yay!

    Thanks Iserbrown x

  • My Otis holiday was Monday to Sunday and the staff were very helpful in finding dates that suited.

  • Hey Tingy,

I had Chemo August last year and finished in December. Im now 8 months post Chemo and have only booked a trip now for October. I was really ill all through Chemo and severe side effects, unfortunately when I finished treatment I thought Id be over it all just like that. My Oncologist and Oncology Nurse said it can take up to a year to recover from side effects. Ihad alot of trouble walking after Chemo and I used to be very fit and healthy. The fatigue keeps going for a while after you finish.

I would say I am only now starting to feel very normal, Im now on Arimidex and working 3 days but not able to do full time still. I too wanted to do a trip at the end, but I wanted to wait until I felt really well to enjoy it.

Ive been really bursting for this, I feel such a need now to get away, its been so very difficult, so Im looking forward to it.

Otis is a foundation for a getaway, it sounds good, but when I looked into it, all the destinations generally are only good for during the week, no weekends and no holidays. This didnt suit me.

Have you started treatment yet?? with rads on top of Chemo, the fatigue will be very challenging as rads is cumulative so I had that 5yrs ago and the fatigue lasted long after the treatment. I had a recurrence last year so no rads, can only do once, had to do chemo :(

Be guaged by how you feel, you'll know when the right time is for you.

    Hugs

  • I'm the same without the young kids. I did think of a cruise in local shores or New Zealand so if there were problems Australia is very close by. I've  just finished chemo and am absolutely exhausted. ..but I am older than you, I didn't find chemo easy either. Kath x

  • Hi tingy, I'm in a similar situation as well. I booked a family holiday 1 month before I found out my bc. I booked and paid a deposit for a cruise to Malaysia and Thailand leaving from Singapore in Jan 2017.

I had my lymph nodes clearance 3 weeks ago and my first meeting with oncologist is in 2 days to discuss chemo and radiation.

I have 3 kids under 10 and cruise is a very ideal holidays as the parents can relax and kids can have a good time as well....we went on a criuse just last january and loved it....we didnt have to think about where and what to eat and kids just wanted to go to kids club all day....perfect for me ??

After thinking long and hard hubby and i didn't want to take a risk so last week I canceled the trip and thankfully I got all my deposit back. I know kids will be disappointed when told but the risk is way greater than the benefit.

To be safe i think I won't go overseas until a few months after all treatments completed. I don't know where u can go in Australia and u can really relax....with 3 kids under 10 ????

Let me know if u have some ideas. Take care and sending u a virtual hug, Liana xx

  • Hi it's a long haul and who knows if you'll be up to travelling long distances. My Oncologist has told me to tell him of I want to travel

In the meantime take a look at Otis

They have properties all over Australia and it is free for you and your family. It will help to break up treatment.
