High Protein Low Carb diet for PET Scan ..... what are your best recipes?

Hubby has a PET scan on Friday - so for all of Thursday, he needs a High Protein, Low Carb diet (then NIL by mouth on Fri til after the scan! He'll be STARVING! ) I may have to jam the kitchen door shut (it is a sliding one) as his dementia means he forgets that he's already eaten & is always on the prowl for food!  Specially during the night!! I Will really need to be on the lookout during all of Thurs Night!

I am thinking Bacon & Eggs for breakfast - no toast or cereal.    Cheese for snacks ....

Any Suggestions for lunch?

Dinner - probably chicken with melted cheese broccoli cauliflower

ANY suggestions for lunch & dinner appreciated

  • aawww thank you @Julez1958 .... we all just do what we gotta do ..... at least he isn't aggressive or nasty or a wanderer ... so I know it could be worse - and he has such a cute pixie face, it is hard to get angry with him - annoyed, yes!!

Just spoke to the Dr we'll be seeing tomorrow - and she said he can have a boiled egg when he gets up .... so hopefully that will keep him 'happy'!

They just say not to do any exercise now .... so I'd better just go downstairs & make sure he isn't on his training bike!   LOL

OMG - I can't remember what I did last week, let alone 20 years ago .... well done YOU

I hope you're still recovering well from your surgery too xx
  • Hi there
I was going to suggest red meat too.
All the best with this , you have so much on your plate what with your own issues and hubby’s but still find the time and energy to post here in a way that is so helpful and caring, thank you.😊
it’s probably a bit off topic but when I had a pet scan no one told me in advance I had to lie completely still for an hour beforehand , no even allowed to look at my mobile phone.
So I decided to keep myself amused to see if I could remember every overseas holiday I had ( starting with my first trip to Bali ( I know!) when I was 20. I was 62 at the time so I did manage to fill up most of the hour doing it slowly!
Looks like all I will have is memories of overseas trips for a while now!
  • Love that idea, @AllyJay thank you ... I’ve tried all the biltong/jerky in town but it is horrible! Jerky is so sweet!  I really need to make some more biltong! I Just use coriander, pepper and salt .... YUM! I made up a drying box that hangs on our back verandah to dry in the natural wind! YUM. That can be a lockdown project!

I have lots of TBones in the fridge ... he gets the Eye Fillet and I get the Sirloin!  We’ve just had bacon and eggs with tomato and cheese .....

He snuck up and ate a meuslie bar or two overnight, so his blood sugar is up to 12.7 this morning! :(  So now I have to ring the hospital today .... and will probably need to walk for hours tomorrow before the PET scan to get it down.  Last time they couldn’t get it lower than 11.4!  It is supposed to be 9 or under for a PET scan.  He had to stop his diabetes tablets on Tues, so it will naturally be higher too :(
  • A nice big steak with eggs perhaps? Do you have any local butchers or shops that sell biltong (dried, salted beef, similar to jerky)...or if no biltong, then bottle shops do sell jerky at the checkout.
  • You could make a chicken and cheese or prawn and chicken omelette for lunch, it's my favourite when I have  my petscan
  • Thank you for that, @June1952 - I will check it out!!

He will eat pretty well ANYTHING - probably simple .... that's half the problem - he munches 24/7, even during the night (he gets up 3-4 times every night & does puzzles & he also searches thru the cupboards & finds every biscuit or bit of chocolate he can find - then hides it & eats it in secret!) .... This evening, I've just found 2 half eaten Tim Tam packs & 3 different opened bars of chocolate (ALL of which I had hidden before he got ill at the start of the year!) ..... NONE of which he is supposed to eat as he is a diabetic.  It's like he is a kid again - and it's a game!  :(  He'll be going on insulin soon if he can't control his eating. :(

But it is REALLY important that he doesn't cheat on Thurs/Fri for this PET scan.  :(   He's not allowed to take his diabetic tablets for 3 days before the PET - so his blood sugars will be high on Fri - both his other PETs we've had to go walkies for 1-2hrs to try & get it down ..... grrrr
