Herceptin, Abraxane and beyond ...Day 2 some side effects

Well today is day 2 after chemo. Yesterday's ticking headache is still with me. I had a weird feeling/pain when I was laughing with my son this morning....my throat felt ...weird...I can't explain it....not sore to swallow not a stiff neck exactly just not normal. Any one else had that?

Can't find anything in the side effects list...will have to keep an eye on it I guess.

Went out food shopping and came back exhausted! I had to lie down for a 1/2 hour. Aching in my joints. Now I've just had a cuppa and my mouth is tingling....grrrr I was supposed to be able to ignore chemo except on the day I have it.

I work at a school in the prep room and desperately want to return...little people are such a joy. Hmmmm maybe this is just a little stumbling block....an adjustment phase.

  • Hi Chris

Thanks for reading and your input. Last time round I didn't get sick and managed to continue house, looking after young children and some home business duties with relatively no probems. Now I work in a school, I am debating the whole return to work thing and have put another post up asking for input from others.

My Dr actually said he's happy for me to work. He knows my situation and doesn't seem to think it is such a problem. I wonder if it could be that the protocol is Abraxane/Herceptin every week so 1/3 the normal dose each time instead of the whopper dose then 3 weeks to recover? In truth it is only the Abraxane that lowers the white cell counts. I am off for another week and can make my mind up at the end of this coming week. Truth be told it is the hairloss and need for head cover of some sort that makes me not want to go back. Kids are curious and observant creatures...not sure I want to be confronted with their frank honesty in their observations. hmmmm such a dilemma

Interestingly this time around I have no take home medication at all! I go to the HOCA and have chemo and that is it. The intravenous anti-emetic lasts for 3 days and by then they expect any nausea to have dissipated.

  • Hey Tonya

All side effects seem to have improved today and no signs of temps....must just be a non-listed specific to me side effect. Thanks for your input.

  • It sounds like your new chemo went ok apart from some niggly side effects. Don't you just hate it when you can't find your side effect on the list they give you.I had a bad headache for 3 days and that wasn't on my list. In the past when I've had a weird throat I usually have a sore throat/head cold the next day. So I hope you are not coming down with a virus which has coincided with chemo. Are you taking your temp? I hope it all just goes away for you so you don't have extra niggly things to worry about - you have enough on your plate.

  • Hi Wendy, your story touched me as well. I think we all live in fear of the cancer returning, and there is no way anyone can tell us who it is more likely to come back in. Sorry it had to be you. Will you be returning to work with children while still on chemo? I ask, because you may be more prone to picking up infections while on chemo, and as gorgeous as little people are, they also have lots of germs, that they love to share. I had 4 rounds of chemo 2 years ago, and gave up my job as a treatment room nurse for the duration. I figured that sick people go to the doctor, and more often than not, the nurse was the first one to see them. I was also looking for an excuse to leave this job as well, so it seemed like a good reason. I was very lucky with my chemo, and had no infections or illnesses at all, not even a cold, but it was something I had been warned about. I also only had minimal side effects, so hope you also will be lucky in this area. Take all the medication they give you, as it is easier to prevent nausea, than treat it once it has a hold on you. Good luck with everything, and post often. Love Chris xx
