Herceptin / nail splitting

Hi all, I have been on Herceptin every three weeks  for three and half years now and besides the nerve pain and the missing boob and the constant heart and body scans - things aren't to bad really!.    But my bloody nails are driving me mental...

Both my thumb nails are splitting in the middle of them and two of my toe nails are the same there is only so much you can cut them back.  I have taken months of hair skin and nails - that didn't work so then I spoke to a beauty therapist and they agreed to try Revitanail so I did that -I'm now on my second month and still no change!!!! I have spoken to the clinic nurses about a side effect from Herceptin but they said they haven't heard of it but only during chemo but I finished that years ago.

Has anyone got ANY tips out there ??????

  • Are they splitting due to ridges or splitting due to nail bed issue. Maybe a podiatrist could advise.
  • thanks Brenda I have to use a spoon for the cans and using the gloves.  I can't wait to be able to sleep without my toe nails catching on the sheets  gggrrr
  • Apart from keeping short, try not to stress the nails. Keep them out of water as much as possible, no washing up. Also no ring pull opening on cans or twisting lids off jars. It was heaven on a stick when I was able to open a can of peas with a ring pull once my nails got better. I was just elated!
