Hair loss

Hi, I'm new at this, I had my first chemo (doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide) on 1/3/17 and was wondering how long it will take before I start to lose my hair?

  • Thanks so much everyone. I had it  chopped off short before i started the chemo, but I will go and get it shaved during the week. I,ve already invested in a couple of wigs (thought I had to have a bit of fun with an otherwise miserable situation. One of my friends even says she is going to wear a wig when she goes out with me - I'm a bit scared to see what sort of a wig that will be as she can be rather outragous!
  • Hey there! yes have to concur with the ladies, I lost mine at about day 15 it started to fall and quickly. I had it cut up short to prepare but when this started happening OMG its relentless so...I shaved it off:) best thing I could have done! It gave me some control back and honestly I was so surprised how quickly you get used to being bald. Its just odd! I had a wig I wore mostly and to chemo I wore scarves...home I rocked it bald :) Hugs Melinda xo
  • Mine started to fall out at day 16 but for a week or so before that it went dull and felt dead. When it started coming out it was clogging up the shower recess. It was distressing to see it come out in chunks. Hubby gave me a no.2 with the clippers after which i felt much better and I didn't notice it falling out after that.

I didn't feel comfortable with a wig so wore bandanas, scarves or chemo hats.
    There are lots available online.
I found natural fibres the most comfortable against my scalp.
Just remember to moisturize your scalp once it is finally bare.
    Take care x
  • Mine went on day 15. I had it cut very short (No 3 clippers) so that only tiny hairs shed from then on, much less dramatic. Losing hair is hard for most women, but my scalp felt very uncomfortable and my hair felt like it belonged to someone else for over a week before it started coming out, so it was almost a relief! I chose wigs (synthetic, light, easy to care for) but there are lots of options and lots of people can advise. Take care.
  • Between day 14 to 17 after chemo you will start with a few hairs then suddenly massive shedding unless you used a cold cap. It's one of the hardest parts. When mine started rapid falling out I took control and had a hairdresser shave it. It was empowering to take control.

You'll find your scalp will get sore and itchy (like if you had it pulled up tight with hair clips in and let it down ) just before it starts to shed. Kath x
