Hair almost all gone!!

Hi all,

Well my hair has almost all gone!  It has happened so quickly - almost 3 weeks to the day since my first round of chemo. I must confess I wasn't ready for it to fall out so quickly. I am off to get a wig tomorrow and some more shorter scarves. My head is also quite sensitive. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything I can rub on once I'm completely bald?

Thinking of you all and have a great weekend. Off to have my second cycle tomorrow. Hopefully no new side effects.

Your (nearly!) bald pink sister

  • Thanks Tonya for the great advice. I will give sorbolene a go on my scalp. I think I will need to shave the rest off within the next day or so if it doesn't fall out. I've also decided I like wearing cotton caps and turbans with bright scarves wrapped around for colour. It's amazing what you can find and be creative with! I've thinking of you and wondering how the move went with chemo and everything. Hope all went well. Cycle 2 went well and so far so good - just a little nausea but I'm still on medication for this for a few days.

Thanks again for you comments and advice. Take care,

  • Thanks Susan. That's sounds like great advice. I'll give it a go. I also got some scarves, hats and a wig from the Cancer Council in Shenton Park today. They give them out at no cost to cancer patients. They are all donated by past patients. A fabulous service. Not sure about the wig but the scarves, hats and turbans look great  and are very trendy and will be great for summer as they are cotton and very soft. Time to get a picture on my profile!

Hope your treatment side effects are not too bad. When is your next one?

Stay well and also keep positive. Thinking of you.

    Take care,

  • Hi Al,

I got my hubby to clipper my hair off yesterday as my scalp was very itchy & sentitive and as I had very thick wave hair when I ran my fingers through it, it was litterally coming out in chunks so now I am doning all my scarves and hats I bought :-) feels really weird but it was bound to happen and it will grow back soon enough so I guess I can feel and look like a toad for a few months at least haha :-D  I am not going to bother with a wig as my Mum had one when she was alive and it was so difficult to look after and there are very few hairdressers that will tackle a wig of any kind because they are just not trained for it unfortunately.  Try to stay positive as you can :-)  OH and if you can get it over in Perth Moo Goo scalp cream is excellent as is the shampoo & general moisturiser its excellent stuff, they use it in the dairies on the cows udders and it works wonders, I'm sure you should find it in you chemist or google it because it is great.

  • Hi I had a very sensitive scalp until all my hair was clipped off and then it felt fine not sure if it's the weight of the hair pulling on the hair follicles that makes it so sore. I used Johnson's baby shampoo to wash my bald head and carried on with it until I had a good mop. I now have a mass of curls and am back to using normal shampoo.

Good luck with the rest of your chemo

  • Yes,your scalp will be very sensitive for awhile. It's very easy to get an irritation when it's covered up all the time too.I used Cetaphil to wash my head and then rubbed some sorbolene cream in.I tried to stick to cotton caps or scarves. That all seemed to help.

  • Thanks Kathy for your kind comments. My daughter described my "hair" as looking like Gollum from Lord of the Rings! That really bought it home but I'm fine with it. I know it will grow back but because I'm out in public with my job ( teacher) I'm just a little more conscious of it but my staff is very supportive and is travelling the journey with me. I'm very open with them anyway.

Goodluck with everything and I will keep in touch

    Many thanks

  • hi al,

sorry, cannot recommend cream to rub on scalp.

i did not lose my hair completely; it thinned gradually. ( must have been different chemo drugs) i wore a baseball cap as it was summer. i bought a wig, but only wore it once. i have a few pictures  when i had chemo and i  looked a bit pale, but my family did not mind, and time passes..soon it is over.

i " freaked" at the thought of losing my hair beforehand; not sure if i would cope with that..lol.. but people do.

my hair did thin gradually, quite a bit though by last chemo,   and hair stopped growing. it had a" kink "in it when it started growing back, so i had a fuzz look for a while.

but its not so bad really, except people would know, and hard if you want your treatment to remain private, although you can wear a wig.

you  see quite a few  with turbans, etc. a young woman who lives in my town actually has alopecia and wears a covering all the time, but gets about  fine, and has a bright personality and smile to match!

you are still YOU, no matter what remember.

the" look good, feel good" programmes can help with tips also. i did not go to that actually, as it was an hour away, and i had other appointments at the time but i think it might have helped me as you would meet others in similar situation.

everyone is different and treatments/ situations are different, but if i can help allay any anxiety/ fear i am happy to do so.

    best wishes, kathy.
