Getting ready for op

hi all.

back from 11 day visit/holiday with my sister to visit my niece in Japan. This had been booked Oct 2015. Apart from calls from doctor and hospital it was great. I go in on 1/04 for my mastectomy and have been told it should only be overnight but home with a drain and visits from a nurse, if all goes well. I am wondering when/if I get a breast nurse. I did ask surgeon but he said hospital would arrange, when did you get to met yours? Did you get one?

cheers

Cheryl

  • Hi Cheryl, I self referred to my local breast care nurse when i was diagnosed. I then chose to have surgery in a state capital, and was called by a breast care nurse from that hospital a few days before surgery. I have finished active treatment, but still have regular contact with both bcn's. take care, Lyn
  • Hi Cheryl - my breast care nurse came to visit as soon as I was taken to my room on booking in (sounds like a hotel doesn't it!, I was in for 7 days with the mastectomy) and she has been with me ever since.  They are a godsend and will look after all those questions for you.  Write lots of notes.

Good luck with your treatment, Take care

  • Morning

thanks for that. I am really keen to meet with someone who can answer my questions about prosthesis. Surgeon also said nurse would do that. I really don't want to go back to work 1 boob down.

  • I forgot to say that I got my breast nurse a few days after my first lumpectomy.

  • I am in Melbourne.  My surgeon passed on my name to my breast nurse who then rang me.  She is utterly wonderful, and even dropped in to see and comfort me while I was in the pre-op room waiting to go in to my mastectomy!
