gene test

Hi Ladies,

I'm feeling a little confused today I have been to see a genetic councillor after talking to others and listening to the talks at the YWBC conference at the GC about the brca 1 and 2 gene test. The professor has offered the test to me due to my type of cancer- triple negatative  and my age when diagnosed then came the talk on the negatatives of finding out.I'm slightly struggling with the fact that a decision I make can affect all family members future insurance, I've spoken to a couple of my siblings and of course the sister is in complete support of what i decide as she has two daughters as well, where the younger brothers reaction wasn't as supportive.I know knowledge can be power and money shouldnt come into the equation but now I'm feeling a little lost.If you had to make this decision how did you weigh it up?

  • Hi Nicky,

Glad you have decided to have the testing done.  When you have triple negative cancer and are so young, with no family history, you have to think is there another reason?  I know it is a hard decision, but now that I know I have the BRCA2 gene, I hope Ash doesn't have it!  Ash turns 16 next March, when they like to perform testing and has asked me recently if I could arrange the testing for her.  I am unsure of whether to do this or not, I think it would be best to wait until she is 18.

Recently caught up in with other secondary girls from the Gold Coast.  Was great to see them all and have arranged another get together possibly at tne end of February 2011.

    Take care, Belindax

  • Hi Nicky  Doesn't it feel good when you finally make a decision?   You're very smart and will know what to do with the information when the time comes.  I will send you luck that the results will be negative.  I have so many genetic things that I have inherited that I just deal with those and haven't thought about the breast cancer gene.  Down the track I may rethink this.  Good luck and as you say please keep us informed.XLeonie

  • Thanks ladies for all your words of wisdom and personal stories, I have taken my time in making this decision and decided to go ahead with it.At the moment my husband only knows and when I have the results then I will determine what I should do next.I have made one decision though to only inform and talk about it to my daughter when she is older(she is 12 now)I think she has already been through more than most children her age and coming into her teens she will be dealing with enough let alone wondering if she will ever have to make a decision. So I now cross my fingers and hope there is nothing more to decide in the near future and will keep you informed.Nicky XXX

  • Hey Nicky,

I had the test and it came back as negative but with the results to be interpreted with caution (they may have not found the mutation in the sample).

I decided to go ahead with the test because at the time the information was going to help me decide what I was going to do with regards to my reconstruction. My family were all supportive but I was 26 at diagnosis with no kids, and my younger brother doesn't have kids either so there really wasn't any family issues for us. Lucky I guess.

I guess there's no right or wrong thing to do - I would just make sure that you do what's right for you.

  • Hi Nicky

I am also thinking about having genetic testing done.  I have a sister with 2 daughters and have 2 boys myself.  My way of thinking is that if my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, then I would probably want to know if I was a gene carrier also so that I could better monitor my risk of getting this horrible disease.  I would also want to know for the benefit of my daughters, if I had any.  I know it can affect your ability to take out life insurance but if I could potentially help my sister or my nieces from having to go through what I am going through, then I think it is probably worth getting it done.  Also, although my boys don't have too much risk, being boys, I know that they also may have a risk and that they themselves may be carriers of the gene which they could then pass down to future daughters etc.

I will be having another chat to my sister about this before I decide for sure but I think that between us we will probably decide to get it done as the benefits of knowing will most likely outweigh the disadvantages.

    I hope this helps you???
