gene test
Hi Ladies,
I'm feeling a little confused today I have been to see a genetic councillor after talking to others and listening to the talks at the YWBC conference at the GC about the brca 1 and 2 gen...
Hi Nicky
I am also thinking about having genetic testing done. I have a sister with 2 daughters and have 2 boys myself. My way of thinking is that if my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, then I would probably want to know if I was a gene carrier also so that I could better monitor my risk of getting this horrible disease. I would also want to know for the benefit of my daughters, if I had any. I know it can affect your ability to take out life insurance but if I could potentially help my sister or my nieces from having to go through what I am going through, then I think it is probably worth getting it done. Also, although my boys don't have too much risk, being boys, I know that they also may have a risk and that they themselves may be carriers of the gene which they could then pass down to future daughters etc.
I will be having another chat to my sister about this before I decide for sure but I think that between us we will probably decide to get it done as the benefits of knowing will most likely outweigh the disadvantages.
I hope this helps you???
