Flat Closure

I am looking for groups around flat closure. I have joined some on facebook but wondered if there was one on here.

I have chosen a double mastectomy with flat closure and no reconstruction and found I had to advocate for my choice, there seems to be a push for reconstruction, which I understand but it seems those of us wanting flat closure get some push back
  • I didn't feel any resistance to not going the reconstruction route, I had more of a push back against me wanting the so called 'healthy' breast removed at the same time as the known-to-be- feral one. I was 58 when diagnosed and have remained flat and am now 64 with no regrets.
  • My surgeon preferred to wait for my mastectomy to settle before doing anything which suited me fine. I decided not to do anything more. He’d have been pleased to do a reconstruction any time in the last ten years but has never, ever tried to talk me into it. I’d be suspicious of any surgeon who did. Some surgeons may just feel impelled to let patients know what’s possible but pushing the case isn’t on.
  • Thank you for your responses. I had push back about getting the double but I wanted one and done and no reconstruction. The push back was about was I sure....at 61 I know what I want and advocated for it, double mastectomy with flat closure is booked for the 26th.
  • Hi @rickiticate
I had double mastectomy with reconstruction.
My breast cancer surgeon laid out the options for me and never pushed me one way or the other.
He said to me it was a very personal decision and people would no doubt give me their unsolicited opinion on what I should do .
That certainly occurred but in the end I was happy with my decision .
I was 62 on diagnosis so like you felt I was old enough to make my own mind up .
  • Hi @rickiticate, I’ve recently had a prophylactic mastectomy and am now flat. I had my first mastectomy 12yrs ago and I would say there is some merit getting a double done at same time. My scars are uneven because of the time lapse.I’m still navigating my way but being flat is easier than being lopsided. There should definitely be a’flat’group here- maybe we should start one🤔
  • Hi everyone,

I just recently had a chance to know  "flat closure" through a beautiful photo of a young lady who had very smooth and flat breast no breast construction. Wow! this is the one I have been dreaming to become.

I had double mastectomy in May 2020. At that time I could not decide for breast construction and my breast surgeon suggested me to think about it later. Gradually I started to be interested in plastic surgery and 2 years later I met a plastic surgeon through my breast surgeon. I was suggested fat grafting surgery for construction.

Since then my application has been on the elective surgery waiting list for 17 months. I have been a public health patient.

Is it better to see plastic surgeon to consult for " flat closure surgery " as a private patient?

  • We have a group here called 'flat chat - no breast reconstruction'. On the RHS of the discussion page it says quick links. Under that it says groups. Click on that and then click on whichever group you wish to join
