First Radiation treatment today !!!

Today I am off to have my first radiotherapy treatment. I am anxious because my left breast is still red, dimply, sore, and warm due to the lymphedema after my lumpectomy 7 weeks ago. They don't want to delay this more because I have already had delays due to lots of testing for my bloods.. Now that all those results came back normal my radiation has to start today.  I just hope it doesn't aggravate the lymphedema. My Oncologist has given the all clear but I still worry. Anyway to top it all off I woke up this morning with a headache and a weird sensation. I slept well last night and this is the first headache in ages. Sort of feel abit lightheaded too.

I hope all goes well with this today and the radiation itself is over quickly. The medical team are wonderful. I ask alot of questions and they reassure me each time. I have my creams ready but any other tips from you beautiful ladies would be much appreciated.

  • It went well today for my first radiation treatment. Mapping and making sure you are in the correct spot is what takes up most of the time. The actual radiotherapy itself took about 15 minutes, but overall I was there today for over an hour. Then a nurse comes to speak to you about possible side affects, creams to use, and answers questions that we may have. That took nearly another hour in another room. So tomorrow when I go in for my 2nd should be alot quicker I have been told.

So it's 1 down and 19 to go including a booster. !!!  I will let you know how it all goes for me Marg and help you with advice when you begin to have radiotherapy too. How are you feeling after the 2nd chemo afew days ago? I hope all is going well.

  • Thanks Deanne, I have just put a wet washer in the fridge and will put it on my radiated area when I get home later today. Your post on lymphedema is very informative too. Lots of advice there too regarding the exercises. So thank you again. I saw  my physio afew days ago at the hospital and she does alot of the lymphatic drainage atleast twice a week and she has shown me how todo the exercises too. But it's so much easier when someone else can massage you too I think. She was using a new piece of equipment that they are trialing and it's called the " moisture pen" or something like that. She puts it on various parts of the breast and takes a moisture reading, then after the lymphatic drainage massage, tests the same areas again and if the level of fluid decreases they know that the massaging is working.  The deep breathing is very important too as you say, and that's how I begin my days. They have also told me that meditation is helpful too.  All the best Deanne.

  • Put a wet washer in the fridge (not freezer) and put this onto the radiated area when you come home. The other idea is to store pure aloe vera in the fridge and put this on within an hour of radiation and then apply your cream.

Also see my post about lymphedema. I have just added some info about deep breathing which maybe of help to you. Good luck. Deanne xxx
