Effexor

my oncologist has prescribed Effexor to help with night sweats/ hot flushes and sadness. What time is best to take it?
  • Thanks ladies, I have started taking at night and am sleeping better with less hot flushes and night sweats. I have been a little dizzy at times, I am up to day 5 and it seems to be settling down.
  • It's so odd because my doctor told me to strictly take it at night and even the pharmacist told me to. I am on a higher dose though. But to be honest I don't find it helps me sleep anyway.
  • Hi @Gerryb
If you Google the brand of the drug and the name for ''patient information'' you will find the paperwork which the pharmacist should give you the first time you get the prescription filled.  If you live nearby, go back to the pharmacy and ask for that and ask them to talk you though it.
As @viking1 says, the chemist are far more up to date with medications - doctors just prescribe the ones the pharmaceutical companies hand out to them as freebies.
    Summer  :-)
  • PS. They really should have gone through this with you! And as Kath says, the chemist, not just salesperson!, is a wonder at giving you info ... they will print the flyer for you and provide good info. I sometimes reckon my chemist is more on top of drugs than my GP but that's playing favourites! Guess the chemist is continually updated on new stuff. Both both should be able to help as this is not a new drug.

  • I was on it for years for depression and as Kath says, it is to be taken in the morning. It says that it can cause drowsiness so don't operate machinery etc but I never found that to be the case. Maybe is if you are new to it. Will stop you sleeping at night.
  • Efexor should usually be taken in the morning as it can keep you awake at night.  However the important thing is to take at the same time and take regularly and not stop abruptly, as you can get light headed suddenly if you do. If you decide to come off it, it must be done very gradually to minimise those effects. Your pharmacist can go through more with you and provide a patient information sheet. Kath x
  • At night time because it has something to help you sleep in it. I've been on this for about a year. It is good but very hard to get off as any other antidepressant. @Gerryb
