Dexamethasone side effects

hello, I was wondering if any one here has experienced side effects from this drug? My oncologist has written me out a script for it, but warned that some people have severe mood swings after taking it!! I start chemo next week on 10/1/18 and along with other anticipated side effects, I think I could do without personality changes!!  Thank you for any comments.
  • I was taking 1, 4mg a day. I was prescribed 3 tabs a day but 1 was enough. I get an IV dose with my current chemo and for the first 24 hours I dont sleep a wink and for a couple of days I am a bit more hungry than usual but other than that im fine. The tabs were daily so the side effects were cumulative
  • Hi Tennille, do you mind me asking what dosage you were taking? I start on 4mg and then decrease to 2mg. Thanks for your feedback. Best wishes.
  • I have a love/hate relationship with Dex.
Side effects are mainly carb cravings, insomnia, puffy face and constipation.  All manageable but when I weaned off it I struggled with feeling very unwell and mood swings.
  • Thanks for your feedback LucyE. It is a matter of seeing how I go!
    Best wishes.

Hi @duxx1234, me again. :) I took Dex and it seemed ok. I did get a red flushed face, but I’m not sure what caused that. It can be hard to tell what causes what with chemo. Just wait and see how you go. Everyone is different, but I found it absolutely fine. All the best.
  • Thanks Karen. So pleased it's been positive for you. I start my first lot of chemo next week and my dr has prescribed 4mg to start with and then reduce to 2mg.  I was debating whether to take it or not, but figure it's worth a try; I can always come off it if I turn into a monster!
    best wishes.
  • Hi I was on Dex for many years.  Doses varied depending on what treatment I was having.   Initially started with 4mgs when I was first diagnosed with bone mets and undertook radiotheraphy.   Its very good at alleviating pain and reducing inflammation caused by radiotherapy.   I did not notice any mood changes but did retain fluid.   Remained on 0.05mg for many years.   After 10 years came off it with no adverse affect.   I still do have 5mg when I have my monthly infusion.  Hope this helps.
