Day 9 First Cycle

I have had my emotional ups and downs and the fatigue has had me spending most of my days on the lounge.  However, today I am feeling stronger and my sister will probably ring this afternoon to ask me if she could pop in to see me.

This would be lovely but would mean extra work in getting the house clean.  I am wondering if it is safe at this stage to go out for coffee.  I know from day 10 to 14 is the most critical time to stay away from crowds.

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Love

  • I was like Janey, went mad with the hand sanitizer. I would get the wipes also and use it to wipe down trolley handles etc also always wiped the table at the coffee shop with them. I'm sure people thought I was mad, but didn't get sick once. Good luck. Paula :)
  • I live in a small country town & figured no problems would occur by going out for cuppas & lunches....all good the first round but ended up in hospital twice after 2nd chemo......can only guess it may have been someone in the shop who happened to sneeze near me!

Since then I have pretty much hibernated at home & my hubby even banned visitors because it frightened us so much! Have just finished chemo & figure I will have plenty more cuppas & lunches to make up for those I missed.

Probably just bad luck I guess....and it most likely won't happen to you....just sharing my experience.

  • Hi Joy

I had put on 2 kg the day after treatment (all that water!). Then it and some more fell off over the next few days so by day 5, I was 2 kg less than before chemo, but that has now stabilised. For the last few days I have been only 1 kg lighter that at the start. Like you I have been eating a very healthy diet - fruit, veg and protein. I think I lost weight because I was eating quite small portions and wasn't eating many carbs, so am adding more rice, pasta etc back into my diet. I am still exercising every day.

Enjoy catching up with your sister. I guess if she has been sick too, she may not be the right person to get to clean your house, but I wouldn't stress too much about house work. I know it's hard and I am the same. I want to see people away from home partly due to the messy house, and partly just to give me a change of scenery, but I keep telling myself that I have a pretty good excuse for any failings as a housewife and that my friends care more about me than about my house.

  • If you are careful about it, you should be able to go out. Avoid very crowded places like shopping centres or supermarkets. A little cafe somewhere shouldn't be a problem unless you are sitting near someone with a obvious cold. I took a small bottle of hand sanitiser everywhere I went and cleaned my hands constantly. I also used a tissue to turn on and off taps and tried not to touch toilet seats or the toilet door without a tissue. In my days 10 to 14 I did venture out even to the university where I work which probably in hind sight wasn't a good idea as this I'd consider a crowded place but I was fine. As I said I was really careful of washing and sanitising my hands. I also took extra vitamin C as well as trying to eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies during this week when I was feeling more up to eating. It will be really great to meet up with your sister and to go out and feel 'normal' again. Enjoy! Love Janey xxx
  • I didn't go out, because for me it was also about the germs that are on things like seats and handrails etc.Maybe I was too fussy, but for me it was only a few days, and I did meet a lady who got a virus and spent 4 days in hospital.I think the hard part is,that even though you feel great during that second week,it is the time that you are so vulnerable.I tried to do things that involved going out in the 3rd week.Cheers xoxoxRobyn
  • Hi Viv

Great advice from you oncologist.  Thank you so much.  Now I can stop cleaning.  LOL and ready to say yes to her possible invite.  I haven't seen her for a almost two months due to her being overseas and when she came back ended up in hospital with a terrible rash all over her body due to a virus.  She had been very sick for weeks prior to her trip.

She will be coming down the the Gold Coast from Brisbane to see my mum in nursing home and will probably want to catch up.  Now I can be ready with no indecision and happily agree.

I am glad also to hear that you are feeling much better now too.  That is also encouraging.  I have been very careful with what I am eating.  No Sugar! Plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and protien.  However, I seem to be losing weight.  Have you lost any weight?  I am not too concerned but it amazes me that with all my lying around that I have.

Thanks Viv for your quick response.

    Big Hugs

  • Great to hear you are starting to feel better. As you know I am a day ahead of you with chemo and yesterday (day 9) was my best so far, I felt great. My oncologist told me there is no need to live in a cocoon even in the day 10 - 14 danger zone. He said just be sensible, if you want to go to the movies, choose a quiet session etc. So I am planning to keep on going out, but just avoid crowds and people sneezing and coughing. So I would think it safe to go out for coffee, then ask your sister to clean your house for you afterwards! Hugs Viv xxxx
