D Day: Surgery

Well it's gone! I had my mastectomy this morning and I am feeling pretty good with very little pain. Hope I haven't spoke to soon. My doctor says there was no complications and everything was straight forward. I will feel much better once I get all the pathology results back. Does that take about 2 days? I Have found the worst part of the mastectomy is the psychological effect. Why does it effect the parts of the body we want. Why can't they say you have Cancer of the fat, and we have to liposuction all of the fat from your legs and stomach and you will be skinny for the rest of your life? ( if only). Any way, one step down two steps to go. Hope everyone has fun at the Mother's Day classic this weekend, I will be there next year with bells on. Thanks again for all your support and for sharing your experiences it is invaluable . Suzicu xx

  • Morning, Still 24 hours till the results come through, I'm trying to keep busy but it's still a drag. I am in Hobart, and I have a friend who has had her breast removed she told me it was a 5 yr waiting list. I haven't spoken to my surgeon about reconstruction yet as it was the last thing on my mind when I found out. He has told me initially that I will have to have chemo and radiation afterwards, as I had a positive biopsy results from my nodes, but this will be confirmed tomorrow. Where are you located? Are you in the public (me) or private system? It sounds like you have already started the beginnings of your reconstruction. Wow that is fast, maybe i need to move? Suzicu

  • Thankyou, I do feel like I've won the lottery :)  but having said that, I know that I am extremely lucky!!

I did do an awful lot of research after my diagnosis, as well as obviously discussing my options with my surgeon and other women who had had the same diagnosis. I found out that I did have a good chance of avoiding radiation and chemo if I was aggressive with it from the get go and have the full mastectomy.  As I said, I am very lucky, I did get the outcome I wanted.  I know the outcome certainly isn't the same for a lot of other people.  But it's good to know there is the chance.

I again discussed post-op treatment options with my surgeon, but we both agreed the side effects of the hormone drugs outweighed the benefits and opted for close monitoring instead.

Was your diagnosis DCIS too?  Are you in a rural area?...is that why the time frame for reconstruction is 5 years?

I have my fingers and toes crossed for you for your results!  I hope the next few days go quickly for you, keep yourself busy and best of luck xx   I would love to hear how things turn out if you get the chance and I will let you know how my journey progresses too :)

  • OMG! That is amazing news. I have 3 more days of waiting but I never imagined that results could end up with no ongoing treatment. Reconstruction is a thought, but I think it's a 5 yr waiting period here. I am interested to here how you progress with yours. My remaining boob is an E, so I would have o loose a bit of weight before reconstruction. Congratulations, don't know if that's quite the correct term. Suzicu
