Countdown has begun....

The countdown has begun....two weeks from now I go in to have the left breast removed (right breast was removed in Dec 2010).  Each time I see a doctor the news gets more dire.  One specialist said that in women under 50 who get breast cancer, usually the cancer is aggressive.  This was his way of explaining why when I had my check up in Nov 2010 there was no evidence of cysts or otherwise and yet less than 2 months later, 13 cysts have shown up with 3 looking suspicious.  No small comfort....

I'm amazed at the kindness of people though from unexpected sources.  I spoke with all 4 of my kids' schools to make sure counsellors there were supporting them and looking out for them. All four kids go to private schools.  Less than an hour later, one school called to say they'd assign a counsellor to my 17 year old daughter, and "oh by the way, we're waiving the school fees this year."  Two hours later the primary school where my two 11 year olds go called and did the same thing (they're across the street from each other).  It made me cry.

I'm as ready mentally and physically as I can be for this surgery but I'm not ready for what the results may tell me.  I got away with not needing intravenous chemo last round (I took tablets - high dose methotrexate for 4 months) but if there's even one cancer cell anywhere in the tissue, I will need to undergo a more aggressive treatment regime.

Today I choose to not think about the results just yet.  I'm just living for today.

  • Hi .I need some positive and helpful friends with  information after my double mastectomy and right auxillary clearance 8 weeks ago.I am finding information hard to find on what happens now.I wish all the love and support to you all.

  • You look like you are in training for a big fight. And that's what this journey is like -it's the fight of your life.I have heard that cancer MAY be more aggressive in young women.I was 47yrs for my first episode of cancer and according to my pathology it wasn't aggressive and I wasn't classed as young. But it must have been a tenacious little bugger to survive radiation and hide for 7yrs only to present last year as a 3cm surprise! It does your head in trying to figure out  why and how.I read so many books, tried to stay healthy blah blah blah. But I have now come to the conclusion that shit just happens!-often to really nice people. But with lots of support and kindness we can get through it.My best wishes to you for the coming weeks.

  • Live for today! That's a great way to think. Your positive attitude's going to get you through.

I found my cancer in my left breast in October, only 7 months after having a mammogram & ultrasound & getting the all clear. The lump was 2cm in diameter & there were cancer cells outside the lump as well. Being 47 when I found the cancer, maybe there is something in it being more agressive when you're under 50, though I haven't been told that.

It's great news that your kid's schools are so supportive & caring.

I too love your shirt. Just what us girls need, a little humour to get us through.

    Wendy.

  • Hi,

'One specialist said that in women under 50 who get breast cancer, usually the cancer is aggressive'.

I've not heard that statement before, from anyone - I wonder if anybody else on this site can clarify that.  It seems strange to me (I was 56 when diagnosed so obviously a medico wouldnt say that to me) - but I have read other posts and spoken with other younger women and have never been told that?????

It seems to be the 'luck of the draw' as to how far our cancers have spread. No rhyme or reason as to why others have secondaries!  My initial diagnosis was advanced bc with widespread bony mets (I didnt even know I had it - no symptoms except for a couple of lumps on my back!)

I wish you well on your journey, and rest assured the doc's will give you all the treatment you need - the agressive treatment really 'aint that bad'.  We cope with it because we have too, we have no other option - if we want to live.

    Good luck

  • HI darl, I just love your shirt. What a wonderful surprise the schools not charging school fees for a year. That has to be a huge relief for you.

I think its a great idea you take time out to not think about anything for a while. Let you wrap your head around all the info and treatments. I know you will "Fight Like A Girl".  I got to get me one of those shirts.

Good luck for your next surgery in two weeks. Hope its contained and  you get clear margins. I wish I had my other breast off too.  I just worry about getting lumps in it and spreading.

Well I hope you have a great two weeks before the surgery and keep intouch.

    Be kind to your self
