Complementary Therapies

I am not looking for a miracle cure but just wondering if anyone has had any success with complementary/natural/ alternative ideas while underdoing and/or recovering from chemo.

No doubt everyone has had plenty of those around that mean well with all of the miracle cures - oxygen therapy, soursop tea, mushroom tea and the like.  I like the idea of natural healing and anything that could assist with recovery without interfering with treatment interests me.

Hi, great you willing to experiment. Now its going to sound bit ??? but trust me its yummo.... My favourite at the moment is

Green apple, pear, kiwi fruit, banana, spinach leaves, slices on ginger then top with pineapple juice leaving room to top it with coconut milk, or alternatively can use, cold green tea, apple juice, orange juice. I also did go to a Bio-Chemist whom does a great raw protein powder (pro-biotic) with an immune booster in it and like to put a scoop of this in it.

I use the Ninja you can buy at Big W costs round $249.00 but damn well worth it. As you can see allot of ingredients go into it and the Ninja has a large enough container to cope with it and you can put in the fridge drink half one morning and leave the other for the next day give it a quick splurt on the ninja.

Also hot tip - Sundays I go to Woolies and pick up bags of bananas, kiwi fruits and anything else marked down. I peel the fruit and bag into freezer bags and wallah!!! all ingredients on hand and quick and easy. This is my breaky most mornings. And being busy single mum I need to be organised lol :) hope this helps

  • Thanks Kezza, I would love your recipe for the smoothie - I too am not a fruit fan so was going to start experimenting with some flavours for smoothies/vege drinks but hopefully I will love your recipe and that will do!!

  • Hi Kari

I did attend to a Bio-Chemist after chemo but had to cease using some of the remedies due to radiation - I did feel more energised after taking a very good pro-biotic with an immune booster in it (almost like a raw protein powder) in my green smoothies (they are sensational and I hate fruit lol - happy to share my recipe) My body now does not retain B12 at all or folate therefore I also take supplement for this called methyl reconstruct it has all the B6 B12 and folate in it. this helps with the fatigue. then for the muscle pain I still suffer I have a very good magnesium powder. I know this all sounds allot but I find it beneficial to me for the fall out of side effects now experiencing. Along with exercise, massages and a gentle Pilates class or yoga tops off my energy boosters to help me feel more human. Hope this helps or is what you were asking. I am resuming these now finished radations.

  • Hi, although its now been over 18 months since I finished chemo, one thing i did find beneficial was to have an oncology massage, this must be given to you by a massage therapist who has been assessed and qualified in this particular form of massage, it is very gentle and helps both the mind and the body, perhaps you could see if you have one in your area, its really a time to allow your body to heal and just find what suits you, I also had reikki as my therapist was qualified in this area as well, good luck on the road ahead, my oncologist said to me if he could give me one piece of advice it would be to exercise within my limitations, advice that I have followed, its all a matter of finding the right balance.

  • Hi:) I think at some time during our treatment,we have all wondered about natural therapies, but for me,the best thing that we can do to give our bodies the best chance of healing is to follow a regime of fresh fruit and veggies, water, organic food when possible and plenty of good relaxation balanced with daily exercise such as walking.I think with something as serious as cancer,we should take notice of the facts when it comes to what is helpful and what is not( and is often just a waste of money and time).I have such faith in my oncologist and RPA in Sydney where I had my treatment that I can't really be bothered any more trying to come up with things that might be better than what I have already had.Having said that though,I believe that yoga and  tecqniques such as mindfulness and meditation ,can certainly play a part in healing. These are also encouraged where I had my treatment. All the best.:) Cheers Robyn xox
