cold feet

Hi girls, hope you are all going as well as can be expected :-)  Last night and today I am having cold feet about having the chemo treatment, I don't want to be feeling ill for 6 months of the year as I am fiercely independent and strong willed and controlling and I see the chemo as being my weakness and I'll have to let some one else take the reins for a while!  I also know that if I don't have it the chances of a secondary coming back is roughly around 10% so I'm just up in the air right now!

  • Hi Susan,

Chemo does sound very scary and I was scared before I started. Unlike you I didn't have the choice but to have chemo. I am not going to sugar coat it, chemo is not a pleasant experience but as said by others it is only a small time frame in your life to make sure you are here for many more years. Unfortunately you don't know what to expect from each round. On the bright side I met some lovely people both nurses and patients while having my chemo which made the experience all the more pleasurable. My doctor said to me that if you have a good attitude whilst undergoing chemo it can make the experience better. I apparently did very well during my chemo considering I was given the strongest dose possible and even though I did have some dark days I attribute some of this to my attitude. Good Luck with your treatment. Believe me the time does go past quickly.

  • It's such a personal choice. I know what you're going through.

I jumped straight into chemo within days of meeting with the Onc. I do question my choice now & again as I got a clear margin in my lumpectomy. You too? But when i find myself questioning my choice it's linked to the control factor. I like control too!! :-)

I am single & 39, no kids, great job, extremely independent (fiercely so) and I was actively dating and having a blast before all this happened in May. The last thing I want is to be bald and on the shelf for the next few months & end of my 30's. But my 30% chance of recurrence reduces to <10% by doing chemo. My brothers both like a bet on the races and they are odds they would both jump at!

I hope my raving on about me in this reply helps rather than hinders. I know for me, I find it helpful to hear how others on here made their choices & decisions & that it's natural to 2nd guess or back pedal. This is major stuff.

I also found a 5mg valium on the morning of the chemo (FEC) did wonders to settle my mind and allow me to calmly take it all in and see how it all works, rather than sit there and have it "done" to me.

Let us know how you go with your decision, dont be too hard on yourself either way x

  • It's the unknown isn't it.No one can say how you'll react ro chemo. If you get to the unit and you are anxious then ask for a calm you down pill.It helped me because I was ready to do a runner when they sat me down.It is so hard to go through with something that you know will make you sick and your hair fall out. It also cuts a chunk of time out of your life.My motto became -prepare for the worst but hope for the best..I won't "sugar coat"chemo cos I had a hard time but lots of ladies here coped quite well  - maybe you'll get lucky!
