Cold caps chemotherapy

Does anyone has experience with cold caps chemotherapy? I have done my first chemotherapy. My hair has starting to fall on the 17th day, quite a handful of hairs. Just wondering if it will keep falling off or happens in the cycle of the 17th day?

  • I'm starting chemo tomorrow and giving the cold cap a try. I'm just hoping I can cope with the cold.
  • Great to read all the comments about cold capping. I find out on Wednesday if I'll need chemo as a precaution (which I still don't fully understand) and I've decided I want cold capping. Having to shave my head scares the hell out of me, this is the part I am most scared of believe it or not. I would love to see a before and after pic if someone wants to send me one. I have pretty thick hair too so I'm hoping if I do lose some it won't be that noticeable.

  • I got my hair cut short. It started falling out on the 14th day. I have just finished cycle 3 (3 weeks on, 1 week off) of a 6 cycle treatment. My hair started growing back during cycle 3 , it is getting quite thick. This was not supposed to happen?

  • Hi, I used cold cap for nearly 6 months. And I didn't need a wig. My hair started to lose a fair bit, on day 21. After that, there was occasional thinning but till the end of chemo, I didn't need a wig. But I've heard that another lady stopped it after 2 -3 times. I guess different people have different response. But I am glad I used it despite the discomfort. L.
  • Hi there,

I used cold caps and you do lose a fair percentage of hair gradually. I feel like of lost 50% but luckily had thick hair to start with. It looks a bit straggly now (6 weeks after completing 6 rounds of chemo) but would be fine with a good hair cut (on my  list of things to do). Despite not keeping all my hair I am glad I chose to use cold caps. Having had a great result with the chemo, surgery etc I feel I can just get on with things without having to wait for my hair to grow back to feel like me again.

We're all different but that's my story. I can send you a piccy privately if u would like to see the b4 and after, let me know..:).

  • Hi Robyn, I have strayed my first chemo using cold caps. I guessed you are right. 2nd day of hair falling everywhere, on bedsheets, bath rooms, sofas. It's pretty annoying. Will probably speak to the nurse on Monday and see if I shall shave it all and wear a wig instead. Was struggling with cols caps as it freeze your head to about 0 degrees. It's made me very sick and headaches. Cheers, Charlene xx
  • Hi Debbie, you are right. Cold cap treatment is new method where they fit your head with a cap anf and freeze your hair to prevent hair loss. It is widely used in Europe and Amreica now. My oncologist has warned me that although it prevents completely hair loss, about a third of hair will still fall out. The nurse has asked me not to cut my hair short to see how I reacted to the treatment. It is my 19th day after first treatment, I have lost some hairs but it's not obvious yet. I have booked myself to a feel good group. Will try out a wig just in case cold cap does not work for me. Thanks for your advice.
  • Hello, there are some ladies on here that have used cold caps, but I am pretty sure that you have to use them from the very beginning. If your hair has started to fall out,I think you will find that it keeps on happening.I actually had the hairdresser shave my head 5 days before I started chemo. The little prickly bits started to fall out on day 14,and my eyebrows fell out that week also! I actually grew to love being bald, andI NEVER thought I would say that!!!Quick showers because no hair to wash and style,no leg shaving, money saved on hairdresser, drive with the window down, When my hair started to grow back I was disappointed!!It is thick and wavy now,and before it was straight!! My suggestion is to try and accept your hair loss, and look for some of the gorgeous scarves, turbans and hats you can buy. Before you know it your hair will be growing back.Cheers xoxRobyn

  • I don't quite understand what you're asking but is it the method where you freeze your head to stop hair falling out or something similar? I did see that on tv but don't know if it's available yet, it did look very uncomfortable.

If your hair has started to fall out it likely will keep coming out in big clumps until all has gone or just leaves wispy bits. I went to the wig library and got a wig and scarves to wear. I must say that although this is supposed to be the worst thing to happen I, like a friend told me, found it great. It was so quick to get ready, no hair to wash, dry and style. Just shower, put on a scarf/knitted cap & you're done.

I was a bit peeved when it came back long enough that I had to start washing it again. Had some laughs with the wig too.

Hope all is going as well as it can be during your chemo.
