Clinical Trials Update

Hello members,

Our BCNA Senior Policy Officer has provided the below information regarding clinical trials that may be of interest to our members. These are also being shared in our Health Professionals Network News and the Metastatic Advisory Group (I shall post in the mets private group re EMBRACE Phase II trial).

Nivolumab neoadjuvant/adjuvant clinical trial

The CA209-7FL neoadjuvant/adjuvant breast cancer trial continues to be open to recruitment, running in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria for patients with estrogen receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative early-stage
breast cancer.
Bristol Myers Squibb will be implementing a digital advertising campaign expected to launch in October/November 2021. This will target both health professionals and patients. More information on the trial can be found here.

EMBRACE Phase II Olaparib clinical trial

EMBRACE is a Phase II clinical trial of the PARP inhibitor, Olaparib, in HR-deficient metastatic breast and relapsed ovarian cancer in patients without germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. Patients with metastatic triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) or relapsed platinum-sensitive high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) after first line/adjuvant therapy who have an eligible tumour molecular analysis result are suitable for the trial. There are 11 sites open in Australia in NSW, QLD, VIC, SA and WA. More information on the trial can be found here or by emailing embrace.study@sydney.edu.au

We encourage members to talk with their treatment team in the first instance about any clinical trials.

  • Double thank you, @Mez_BCNA  - I appreciate the Trials info being made available to members, as we never know just who it may help xx

  • This may be a dumb question. But how do I know if I need a drug trial?
I've completed my standard treatment. Mastectomy, Chemo and Radiotherapy.
Now taking Aromatase Inhibitors.. Would my Oncologist tell me if Trials are applicable to me?

  • No dumb questions here, @Abbydog - Usually your Onc or Rad Onc will suggest any trial that they believe suits your particular condition and how you are responding to treatment .....

3.5 years ago, my Rad Onc suggested I go on one where 50% were on placebo & 50% were on a trial drug (that was targeting early stage BC) and I hesitated & stuck with the 'regular' treatment as I couldn't live with myself if I had the placebo & got a recurrence!

They are usually very 'up to date' on what is on offer .... tho the USA BC Sites may mention newer trials that are not yet available to Aussie ..... so if you spot one and mention it to them, they may be able to start lobbying to get the trial started in Australia too, if it would be of benefit to their patients.

Often the trials relate to those with further advanced cancers, to give them more quality of life with less pain & discomfort  ...

Any immunotherapy treatment right now is really 'up there' for ALL stages of cancer, as it may stop it in its tracks, if they can get the right mix for those with BC.
