Choosing the right surgery

hi ladies I'm tameeka I'm 28 an I was diagnosed with stage 3 hormonal breast cancer in my right breast and 2 nodes.. Im having my surgery in 2 weeks which I've opted to have a double mastectomy and a reconstruction but not 100% on what reconstruction to have yet as I still have 5 weeks of daily radiation to go through after my surgery so I have a lot of options on what I can have but I just wanted to here your stories and what you had done and what you ladies recommend having?

  • Have join both pages and everything has just made me more confused and overwhelmed by what I want an the decision I have to make so think we just going to put a hold on everything and just do the double mastectomy until my mind is completely and 100% made up thinks that's the best option for me at the moment..
  • Hi @Tameeka I didn't see this post and typed a long reply to your other one. Great advice from everyone.

  • Hi Tameeka, so sorry that you are here, but you sound like you are right onto things and know what direction you are heading which is great. Definitely the reconstruction group would be great for you to sift through all the stories. As Amazonia mentioned I had a left breast mastectomy/diep flap reconstruction due to a recurrence I had in 2015. So I underwent chemo and a lumpectomy. 16 months later I had my mastectomy/diep flap recon all in one surgery, it was massive but I love the fact that its all me, I have to have a revision surgery to tidy up and of course there is a tummy incision as well, but I got a flat tummy lol. I couldnt have an implant due to radiation in 2011. So it sounds like you have some direction in knowing youre interested in implants, so hopefully lots of ladies will jump in like Primek to help you with that surgery :) If there are any other questions, fire away, we're all here. Hugs Melinda xo
  • I had tissue expander reconstruction almost fully inflated, but didn't  need radiotherapy . I also know of a lady who had this done pre radiotherapy. Sometimes the scarring can make the pocket tight so they can clear that out after radiotherapy when changeover happens so the pocket and implant are soft. The changeover was super easy and not at all lie 1st surgery. 48 hours in hospital though for antibiotics to reduce infection risk, but that's it. The 1st surgery is hard going and takes about 6 weeks to recover.
  • Hi Tameeka. Wow so much to go through at such a young age!
We have a great reconstruction tool called BRECONDA.
BRECONDA aims to help you make decisions about breast reconstruction.
Just click here and create an account to watch the video: https://breconda.bcna.org.au/
  • Thank you so much I have joined both pages just waiting for approval my Surgeon told me about this side and told me to hop on cause u ladies are amazing and she's was right :) I have just gone through 18rounds of chemo now surgery then after recovery I have 5weeks of daily radiation.. I was leaning towards reconstruction with implants as I don't wanna go through another surgery as I'm a single mother of a little 3 year old so getting home to her is important but then again I wanna get this right so I don't have to spend any more time away from her coz she has already missed her mummy this last 7months.. So just wanna bit of help about this decision:)
  • Welcome Tameeka and sorry that you have joined us but it's a wonderful group of knowing women. !
Best plan would be to join relevant groups such as young women with bc and the reconstruction group which has a wonderful cross section of stories and photos of all stages of surgery experiences.
Just requires application and admission formalities with links attached.
I have just had second mastectomy and double tissue expanders inserted with implant exchange to come in the future and I'm so lucky to be happy with my choice and recovering well.
Everyone is different, I had chemo but not radiation. I know many surgeons prefer not to reconstruct with implants post radiation due to risk of contracture and skin tightening due to radiation but I have heard of successes there.
melclarity and nikkid have both posted their tram flap stories in the reconstruction amongst others to look out for.
Perhaps mention where you are located as you will no doubt find women in the same area who have knowledge of local hospitals and surgeons.
Hope this helps and much good wishes to you as you wade through all the information and for your upcoming surgery.
