Chemo and odd side effects

I am overloaded with information sheets and I cannot find what I want, I am staying away from Google as advised by every one...it  is so easy to get sidetracked :D
So far (3 days after my 1st cycle of AC chemo), I have had mostly what I expected - mild nausea, reflux, headache, insomnia, hot flushes no big deal as I went through all these in menopause.
However each night I'm having dreams / hallucinations?  People talking to me in my ear and of course I wake up.  It is nothing sinister usually someone who has passed away, so oddly comforting.
However, the last two days I can hear my Samsung alarm going off, I've checked my phone, hubby's phone - no alarms on either. I can hear it off and on nearly all day when it is quiet.  Anyone else had this??
I must add that I had my ear syringed the day after chemo, wax buildup and I was deaf in that ear for a few days so that may have something to do with it?
  • Thanks Ladies for all the replies it helps to have this information:)  I have no trouble falling asleep but wake around the 2.30am mark, then on and off.  Last nights dream was my dear Mum, so not disturbing and no bad dreams.

The Samsung Morning Flowers ringtone is annoying though as it is the ringtone for all my calls from hospital, doc, breast nurse, onco etc

So I changed it and guess what I missed two calls because I didn't recognise the ringtone ;) I still hear it.  So I'm chalking it up to the chemo and the ear syringing / tinnutis thing and forget it.  Maybe it is the stress thing.

I have had tinnutus in one ear for years, due to an ear infection after a cold.  I did not know I had it but after taking 2 flights and experiencing the worst pain in that ear on each landing, I went to doctor and he gave me antibiotics.  It was deaf in that ear for my whole holiday and as a result I have tinnutus in that ear. The noises can change and it's bearable but this one is annoying.
  • My hearing certainly suffered during chemo and is still a little dodgy.  I have read (possibly here) about someone who lost hearing due to the hairs in her ears being affected by chemo.  But tinnitus does seem to be an issue for some.

  • Hi @Nefertari. No official knowledge here! But I have noticed a number of people report an increase in bad dreams during chemo. It's not surprising, your psyche is already disturbed by a cancer diagnosis, and now your body is flooded with poison and other assorted drugs that can lead to insomnia. If you're only briefly dipping into sleep and waking up a lot, you're more likely to remember your dreams. If you're not getting the deep sleep your brain isn't processing the days events as well.

A few other people here have reported chemo related tinnitus. I asked my oncologist and she said chemo doesn't affect your ears. I reckon there'd be some people here who'd disagree! Stress can sometimes trigger auditory problems. I'd suggest to wait until you've got through the first full chemo cycle, and if it's still happening, go and see your GP.

Let us know how you get on! Take care, K xox
  • The steroids heightens anxiety symptoms. What you are experiencing is something people with anxiety can get. You might also be sleeping a little lighter presently.

I too recall   vividly hearing my mother speak to me and I awoke expecting to see her. I also saw my father in a dream and I spoke with him. I don't know though if this was just me wishing my parents there. ..but I just took it as they were there, and letting me know they were walking beside me through this journey despite being passed. It was very comforting.
  • Can't say I had that one.  I know a few have had the bad dream thing though. @kmakm may be able to shed some light.

Maybe it is from your ear syringing.
