Changing roles

I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast Ca..tomorrow I'll see my Surgeon to work out a surgery date. I am a reg nurse and work in Women's Health ...in the morning I will be nursing post op patients that have had an op for breast cancer...It's all rather surreal and I'm now the "patient".. I have to stay professional but all I really want to do is have a cuppa and a chat with these amazing women and talk about there journey ......and I'm one off them....
  • Hi Julie,

Just stay strong and keep the faith within yourself and you will get through this today, and every day there after!!!

  • Thank you all so much for your response... I am feeling very sad and tomorrow I'll go to work and have to put on a brave front..... My surgeon feels my nipple may have to go...not that I cared that much for it but today I do... I put my iPod on and walked and thought what the f..surgery on Thursday and then ?? I guess I'll just get on with it .?.as we do ....I felt joy getting your messages ....so once I get my head around this I promise to be more uplifting but for now I'm not feeling so fabulous xxx
  • WOW!!! You know it is hard for anyone to get BC, but when you are a nurse that deal with the patients of BC?

You know the other side of the coin which is startling to realise I would assume? My GP would say to me how childish his patients were when they were diagnosed and going through cancers. That was of course until the day he became a cancer patient himself. It grounded him very quickly. I never thought that medical staff would ever get illnesses such as cancer. Your blog has made me realise that we are all human no matter what we do as a profession. Good luck with your appointment today Julie, I hope it all works out for you! I myself had Stage 2, Grade 3 BC in 2011 and  I am now in remission after having 6 sessions of chemo and 29 sessions of radiotherapy. Like the others have said this network is brilliant for allowing you to step inside the world of BC sufferers and survivors alike. And to chat with them to find an understanding with your own BC journey. Again I wish you the best and pray you get through this entirely. Just remember you are a strong woman Julie :)

  • It is bizzare to find yourself in this position but guess what its not uncommon. Women are nurses and women get breast cancer. My sister is a registered nurse and she was diagnosed in January 2005. Then she became the patient.

I truely believe that God only sends what he knows you can handle; and women are amazing at what they can handle. My family have a breast cancer history of 3 generations. My 2 sisters & I have collectively had 3 hook wire biopsies,4 lumpectomies, 9 needle biopsies, 1 MRI guided biopsy, 1 genetic test, 2 lots of radiotherapy, 1 double mastectomy, 1 reconstruction, 1 tidy up and 3 family members lost to this disease.

Its a bitch- but you just get on with it and find the laughter and love where you can.

You will find that here with other survivors and within your health profession. Stay strong dont get down and reach out to people. Its amazing where your support will come from.

  • Welcome to this network, where you will find all the support and advice that you need,to help you through this experience. How bizarre to be nursing ladies that are in the same position as you soon will be.It is so true that BC touches everyone.I had my surgery (mastectomy) last September, followed by chemo.I am now on Tamoxifen. In the early stages,I was so anxious and worried, and this network was my absolute saviour.I have really good family and friends support, but this is something different, and very special,as you are about to find out.Stay in touch, and let us know how you get on with your surgeon.Cheers xox.
