CBD oil for chemo symptom management (High Grade Triple Neg BC)

Hello, I am researching and considering CBD oil use for chemo symptom management.
i have recently been diagnosed and have experienced several side effects.
I prefer not to load my body with additional medicine to counter balance the chemo.

I am certainly not well versed but what I understand is that the supply and demand are there, it is costly (in fact varies in price), many variables, uncertainty around content you’re actually getting (when it is not regulated) and clarity around how many cbd mgms in the bottle? Breakdown - cbd or Cbda also?

I will raise this topic my oncologist tomorrow. Any insight, knowledge, experience. would be greatly valued and appreciated as I plan to have this convo as best informed as I can be 🙂

  • I had a chat with my now regular on ( as I had been seeing the locum). She has no objection to my choice in using cbd oil. She only asks that I let her know when I have started and get as much info on the content so that she also is better informed with treatment choices she is making.

My dilemma now is finding a trustworthy, honest and willing to share content info person. I have discovered so far that this is again no easy path. No shortage of supply but so many variables and personalities. I build all interactions on trust and relationship connection first - maybe I’m anal, but heck I want to know when I’m making A choice for my bodies overall well-being that I’m well informed and making best choices given the circumstances - otherwise known as empowerment when much has been stripped away. Is that too much to expect/ask? Is any part of this BC experience free of pot holes? x

Any advice, insight, etc highly welcomed
  • @OnNett - basically it can take the edge off aches and pains, muscle/joint discomfort caused by AIs.   I didn’t have chemo, so never took it for that reason.  I am just not ‘as aware’ of AI discomfort as I was prior to taking the oil.  I had extreme aches/pains/discomfort with Letrozole and Exemestane. I am currently on Arimidex and started taking the oil shortly after the final switch and am coping much better now.

However, everyone is different... talk to your Onc about it.

  • Can I ask what symptoms specifically  you think it has/or could hep with?
  • I've raised the use of CBD oil with breast cancer treatments here - some interesting articles & posts:  https://onlinenetwork.bcna.org.au/discussion/19569/medicinal-cannabis-oil-amp-reduction-of-pain-improvement-in-well-being/p1

I take it for my AI side effects - and since starting about 12 months ago, it has reduced my side effects to a manageable level.  My Onc has written me a letter that I keep in my wallet - saying that I am on it for side effects of BC meds.  It is ridiculous that the use of it is still so hard to access legally .... Whilst your Onc says there is not enough evidence that it does NOT interfere with your chemo - there is plenty of anecdotal evidence (straight from the patients'  mouths) that it DOES help them cope with their cancer treatment.
  • Hi Sister, I totally agree with you. That is my concern, it’s potential interference with chemo. The onc said there is not enough evidence that it does not interfere. The supply chains state it does not impact on chemo treatment. Left in limbo again 😔
  • @tasia...It's a ridiculously stupid process for CBD oil at the moment.  I have been advised to use it but it is so difficult and expensive to get through the "proper" channels.  A supplier would love to get the oil tested for content but cannot due to the legal processes and my onc would love to know what the content is because he is interested in it's efficacy.  My specialist would be happy to apply for me to get it but there's no guarantees that I would be approved and no guarantees if I was, that I would continue to be approved and it would cost me hundreds more than the unregulated oil, as I understand it.  Absolutely ludicrous situation particularly when everyone thinks it's available on prescription.  I'm crossing my fingers that the TGA review comes up with something better.

Do remember though, CBD Oil is still a chemical.  Natural doesn't make it necessarily safe although it does seem to have very few side effects.  It can, however, have contraindications with some drugs.  So, good idea to discuss it thoroughly with your onc.
