Banana garbage!

Day 6 - after round 1.

Chemical hangover remains the same. It's quite an effort to even stay upright. Food is not my friend anymore either..I ate a banana yesterday and it actually tasted like garbage, you know when you open the otto bin and that smell? it tasted like THAT! So it seems my diet will consist of strawberry jam on toast, weet bix, tomato toasties, yogurt and chicken noodle soup!

Something that's foremost in my mind, other than getting through this, is the impact my illness has on everyone else. It even effects the dog! He follows me around, checks on me and is so gentle with me. I am almost tortured thinking about how this is affecting my friends and family, in particular my husband and children.

My children are grown now and that may be a good thing when it comes to things like this, it can also be a bad thing. You see I think when kids are little they somehow are able to make big things not big, their innocence is their protector. But when you have grown children, you are constantly worried about what they are thinking and feeling. They have their own issues of everyday life to deal with and now a new and sometimes scary situation is added to the mix. I always have encouraged my kids to ask questions, not matter how silly and I am always up front and honest with my answers and I hope this has given them the tools to cope with things such as this. But, No matter what, I love them with all my heart...

Next is my husband....My poor hubby, I constantly ask him if he's OK...and he says.. are you? I often wonder what is going on inside his head. We were thrown in at the deep end and told to tread water and if I am exhausted already, I can only assume he is too. He has been to every single appointment, sat for hours for the start of my treatment,(with many more to come) taken on the cooking, the washing, the cleaning and even survived the supermarket all while working 6 days a week and parenting (it doesn't end just because they're grown! ) and looking after me. I know I always say, 'welcome to my world', but I do acknowledge that this is a big thing for a man to take on anytime, let alone as well as having a unwell spouse. We took a vow 25 years ago, in sickness and in health, I know I will be back to health in a while and we can get on with our lives.... I love you with all of my being.

I appreciate everything everyone is doing for me, no matter how big or small, the calls, the texts, the comments, the hugs, the visits, the meals...it all adds up to making this experience a little easier. Life goes on.......

  • You know everyone's been saying Fruit Tingles and not once have I ever remembered to buy any. I was just up the shop too, on my trusty black stallion push bike, and I STILL forgot Fruit Tingles.

  • To all the ladies before , well done to you all ?? 25 years ago the planets must have aligned for you when you all met your partners , and I am so happy for you all , ?? Love is a many splenderded thing ??.

When my ( soon to be X ) husband  found out his first words where '  breast cancer is just soooo vougue at the moment '. I would have liked to choke him for all the women on this and many other pages who have suffered so much , and will still have lots of  fear and anxious to go , how dare he !  Never came to 1 appointment with me , think I really lucked out on my choice of hubby, have come this far without him , sky is the limit on where I can go .... Hold on to your lovely 25 ers girls , and let them know by kind word or deed , that you couldn't do it without them .  Team work is a wonderful thing ?? and good luck to anyone whose spouse can not deal with changes to their routine or the attention they are now missing out on due to BC ..... We can do this on our own girls , harder , but doable ... Stay safe and well , don't let the loneliness of not having a loving partner slow you up ..,, you fight even harder sisters . May peace and contentment help us all on our journeys . CARPE DIEM ??????

  • Fruit tingles can also help with the taste in your mouth, as well as ease the heartburn a little.

    Hang in there, Lyn

  • Twenty five years married here too. At first hubby didn't realise the gravity of how fast I could sink with little notice. He is now aware I can be good and then down within just a few hours for really no apparent reason.

Tomato cupasoup and bread dipped in it is about all I can eat for a few days, then rolled oats. My behind says I can do without eating much for a few days anyway as long as I keep up drinking lots of water to flush out the system.

  • I felt like I was reading my story. Yes, 25 years married too. Two adult children and hubby has taken on everything. Well out of his comfort zone with the cooking and shopping but he did it!

my diet was water, pumpkin soup and quiche. Bread and potatoes were the most disgusting thing and even when I had finished chemo it took a while for me to eat them again. Taste is the little thing we all take for granted until it goes!

i too worried about my girls 23 & 20, and encouraged them to speak out and ask me anything and I always told them what was going on. I was hospitalised so many times and they knew when to be on alert for high temps and took me to hospital if hubby wasn't available. He has been with me to every appointment although now I'm on radiation and can finally drive myself,  he can relax a bit.

you are doing so well. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Just take one day at a time. We are fortunate in that we have the best care given to us and support from family and friends. Yes, life goes on........

  • Agreed icky tastes are the pits, low point was gargling bicarb soda in water which tasted like rotting fish eeekk.  Good news is tastebuds have returned around day 10 :) so making the most of them before round 2 comes along.

We are so lucky to have supportive partners; we obviously all made good choices 25 years ago, I honestly cannot imagine going through this without him.

    Love & luck

  • The metal taste is just the worst.... have been having mints 24/7 to ease the taste a little. As for the hubbys it must be so hard on them to see us like this.  Mine in the beginning was very angry and actually "pushing" me away as he didnt know how to deal with situation. You see having lost both mother and father to cancer this was a BIG blow to him.  But as time went by he has been the most caring, lovable person on earth and I would not have done this without his support.  Yes after 25 yrs of marriage this is really the testing ground and mine has passed with flying colours.  To me its very sad when I hear that some husbands have decided they could not handle their wives cancer journey and just got up and left, very sad.

We are lucky to have partners that love us and care for us!
