ANXIOUS WAIT

Hi All,  I feel so silly typing this post after reading of others experiences, but thought I would ask for some advice.  I have had an exicisional biopsy taken from my left breast on Monday the 24th November 2014 and am starting to feel a little out of control, my anxiety levels are sky high and my patience and tolerance is at at it lowest.  My surgeon has told me that my results could take up to four weeks to return, this is such a long time to wait and it feels like I am slowly unravelling while my life is on hold.  Can others advise me if this is correct or can I request my GP have these results hastened up?

  • Hi Jennifer, did you have your surgery in a public hospital? If so you would have a multidisciplinary team. All of this team would receive a copy of your pathology, this would include your surgeon, your referring GP, your breast care nurse and Oncologist.

My breast care nurse never bother to contact me "even though she said she was at the meeting when they were discussing my pathology and treatment plan.  When I did see her she said, nice to meet you I have your pathology results upstairs and wondered who you were. This was 7 weeks after surgery.

The one problem that you may have is no one wanting to step on the Oncologists toes by going before him.

  • Hi Sarah,  Thanks for your advice, I have heard from my GP and also the McGrath Nurse in our area who is going to follow up on my results as well.  I have been told maybe by Tuesday i should have some answers.

  • Just love the comment about career change, this is one thing that I have noticed during this saga, (hate the word journey).

The local McGrath Breast Care Nurse really needs a career change, or to retire.  She is a shocker, and I have not yet met another that appreciated her assistance.

The day that I had my surgery I had that horrid injection into my breast for the radiation tracker to find lymph nodes, no local anesthetic, then had the hook wire inserted, they had trouble finding my 20mm lump- yep feeling really great by now. Then the nurse came to take me from one end of the hospital to the other, I really wish I had of said something, but I just followed along.

She said "cant you walk any faster", well no trying to carry my overnight bag, trying no to move too much as instructed with the hook wire, and to top it all off I had on that wonderful hospital gown with no bra.  I should have said sorry love my Ecups don't jog.

It was all wrong, as is your waiting for the results.  I have not heard of anyone else waiting this long.

    Sorry for venting.

  • Who ever is receiving them first go and have a break down in front of him/her. Make an appointment and then another one. I cut 3 weeks off a wait for an MRI (public)by doing this. Most people are terrific and understand. One of two need a career change but they are few and far between. Good luck we all understand.

  • Hello Candice,  thank you for yor reply,  My surgeon made me an appointment for the 16th December  and advised that there may not be any results but that she would see me before they have their christmas closure.  I don't think I could get through christmas not knowing.  I have made a call to my GP's office this morning and she is going to get back to me by Monday or Tuesday.  Fingers crossed I will have some answers.  Best wishes to you, sending positive thoughts your way as well.  I take my hat off to you women and your strength you are amazing.
