After 4th AC, a Porta-cath insertion, feeling depressed

I had finished my 4th cycle of AC and my left arm had DVT so I need to do a porta-cath insertion surgery so they won't use my left arm vein for infusion. I just had my porta-cath surgery yesterday, surgery went well but I feel so depressed. For the the past few days, I was constipated and had sore haemorrhoid. Now that I just had a portacath insertion surgery seems to make me my haoemorrhoid even sore. Also because of my left arm DVT, I'm on blood thinner daily. It seems my journey has been so much complications (from one lead to another).I have been so depressed. I really hope this journey going to be a easier to let my body heal abit before my part 2 chemo Taxol comes. Thanks for reading my rant. Appreciate words of encouragement.
  • @Julez1958 Thanks for your respond. I wish I am dealing with one symptom at a time but now I am dealing with so many symptoms at one time- post surgery symptom, haemorrhoid sore and DVT on elbow. Very upsetting n lost. I wish it will improve tomorrow.

  • hi there
i never had chemo ( mastectomy plus radiotherapy and now hormone therapy) but I did have a lot of pain after my mastectomy and it made m depressed as I wasn’t used to pain.
my GP referred me to a psychologist who specialised in cancer related distress and I had a couple of sessions which really helped .
the emotional / psychological impact of breast cancer is just as important as the physical impacts and it’s important to look after your whole health.
You are not alone and the others on here “ get it “ in  a way others don’t.
    Take care🌺
  • @Afraser Thanks for the advice. I will take note of any side effects. Yes, I think I need to let out my emotions. Thanks for reading my post.
  • @Siewli

Most people find A/C the hardest, but not all. The taxane family of chemotherapies have their own side effects. Big thing is not to let them continue without seeking help. Many annoying side effects go quickly when the treatment stops. Most of all talk to your psychologist about your feelings, not just your side effects. Both cancer and treatments can play havoc with your emotions. Walking helps a lot, writing your feelings out in a daily or occasional journal can help too. Once you start Taxol, count the sessions down. Each one is one nearer the finish line. Best wishes.
  • @noosa_blue150 Thanks for responding. I just wish my body will quickly heal but I know it's going to be a slow process. It just so frustrating.
  • Hi- that AC chemo is the hardest on your body, Cath62 is right . I have a Portacath which I asked for as soon I knew about treatment regime -I knew my venous access was going to be a nightmare ( i also pop into oncology whenever I need regular bloods , rather than run gauntlet with pathology co. As they can’t access Portacath). I love it
imthink taxcel, usually easier too although just be aware of side effects like peripheral neuropathy and discuss that with staff so if it occurs it can be managed .
you will have good days and then you’ll,have bad days so the trick is to work out best way for you to cope. It’s good that you’re seeing psychologist . Hopefully you have some support around you ?family ?friends .
I also, found walking very good when I could manage it -helped with the depression and anxiety and made me feel better even when coping with chemo. Feel, free to hop on here too, we know how you feel .
    hugs to you
  • @Cath62 Thanks for responding. I do have a psychologist session next week.
  • Hi there @Siewli, some days are harder than others when we go through treatment. You have had some challenges for sure. Everyone is different and some get through easier than others. You are progressing and should be proud of that. You have got through each stage so far and you continue to do that which is great. I hope it gets easier for you.

Have you spoken to a counsellor yet? I know many of us needed that professional support as went went through treatment. They may be able to help you out with strategies to deal with your depressed feelings. You don't want that feeling to drag you down as it makes everything harder.

Best care going forward. Fingers crossed it gets easier  AC is tough. In many ways I found taxol easier and hope it is that way for you too.
