5 days since sentinel node biopsy

Hi everyone! Just wanted to ask something. It's been 5 days since my surgery and my pain has gotten worse in my armpit. I also don't feel right. Not nausea, maybe slightly dizzy (hard to describe, but only slightly), but I don't feel good. The scar looks fine but I can't tell if there's swelling, it blends in with the fat under there. Should I be worried? I don't want to bother the nurse unless it's necessary. Did anyone have the same thing?

  • My site from sentinel node removal was quite sore for a couple weeks...my breastcare nurse it could be because there are nerves around that area that could have been disturbed....3wks post op now and is only painful to touch x
  • Have you got a temperature? A low level infection may have the effects you describe but also may be hard to detect. Go back if it doesn't clear very soon. Now is a really good time to get used to making sure that your concerns and feelings are heard by your medical team. They may know more than you about cancer, but you know more about you. Best wishes.
  • Thank you @Sister and @arpie!
I rang the nurse who thinks i should just keep an eye on it for infection. I guess it has only been 5 days amd the anaesthetic could still be hanging around.
I guess I better just rest. Im pretty hard on myself and expect to get on with things. 😊
  • @MezDiaz  - Are you still in hospital & lying down a lot?  Sometimes the after effects of an anaesthetic can make you feel a bit crook too - and can take up to a week to work out of your system.  I think drinking plenty of water can help wash it out.

Absolutely, as @sister says - check with the nurse if you don't feel right!

Having said that - you may also need to be particularly careful when getting out of bed for any reason, specially at night - as that is when you may be at your most vulnerable.   (I used to throw up from anaesthetic &  pass out after getting out of bed following surgery.)  I now have to just take my time & know it  :(

I sit up in bed for 1 min, then swing my legs over the side of the bed & sit for 1 min, then slide off the bed with feet on the floor (but supported by the bed) and stand for 1 min & only then if I don't feel dizzy, start walking!  A pain in the butt, tho!

I hope you are feeling better soon!

  • Bother the nurse. Pain is one thing but feeling dizzy and unwell is something else.
