2 weeks post surgery

2 weeks ago I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. My diagnosis came on 6th July, so it all happened fairly quickly really. I did not have any lumps, I had a bleeding nipple, which my Dr tried to tell me was an infection after going to Bali! So I am glad I made a fuss and followed it through, the cancer was in the right breast and it was my decision to do both, one for peace of mind and the other for purely selfish reasons, I wanted them to look the same! My family, friends and my husband have been a great support, I am very lucky. But I have my up and down days. It's odd, I don't feel like I am going through breast cancer, as I don't have to do any follow up treatments, so I am very lucky compared to some. my surgery went well and I got the all clear after the lymph node tests. I have a fair bit of swelling now though, and was wondering what anyone suggests for that, any relief would be good. I have gained a lot by reading everyone's posts on here so thanks for sharing ladies. Jo

  • My doctor said he cut out 2.5cm, which is why he pushed for the mastectomy. I have read a lot of stuff since and there is really a mixed opinion on DCIS,but really it is your body and should be your decision. Love and light Jo
  • Can I ask Balijo how large your DCIS was?

Mine was 1.5cm and I have had a lumpectomy and been told the margin is too close and need another lumpectomy and then radiotherapy. The whole radiotherapy thing scares me. My specialist said DCIS is precancerous but then you need radiotherapy to prevent it turning into invasive cancer or mastectomy.

My biggest worry is I have two sisters with breast cancer, one has passed away and one was diagnosed a few mnths ago with invasive breast cancer; I had my mammogram because of her.

I am seeing a plastic surgeon this week to get more information. How to the breasts feel so far?

  • I still think it best to get it checked. One of the ladies on this site had swelling above her expanders and it ended up being a collection of blood which she had to have drained.

  • Hi Tonya,

The swelling seems to be at the top and the sides but does not go under my arms. My surgeon was happy with the way the scars have healed. I am getting fills done as well as I have expanders in, so this may cause it too?

Thank you to you both for your replies.

  • Glad you have come through surgery ok and don't need anymore treatments. Is the swelling on your chest under the scarlines? It could be a seroma(collection of clear fluid). In anycase, you need to see either your breast care nurse or surgeon. You may need it syringed off.I had this problem for a few weeks after my mastectomy. It doesn't hurt cos the area is numb.

  • Another reason why we have to speak up about our bodies, we put our faith in doctors and most of the time we get the help we need, but in cases like this, well done for pushing the fact. i am sure the ladies who have had  bi-lateral mastectomies will have hints and tips to help you fell more comfortable, meanwhile please keep comming back, and yes unfortunately like the rest of us here you are going through bc, and will go through good days and bad, but always make time for yourself and never knock back the help of outher. The positive side (if there is one) is you can now share your journey and experiences to help others through the site. and remember shouting bawling, laughing or any other feelings are allowed to be vented right here. Take Care and Regards Moira
