2 more sleeps

Hi my surgery date has come around. I'm having a lumpectomy on Thursday. The actual surgery doesn't bother me at all, well apart from the fact that I've got a REALLY bad shoulder, and of course its under that arm that they're taking the lymph nodes. I'm hoping that they don't move it in a position that will affect it because I'm in a wheelchair & if they stir it up even just a tiny bit I wont be able to get around on my own.  After the surgery I'm having radiation therapy. Can anyone tell me how long it is usually between surgery & the start of radiation. As I said the actual surgery doesn't bother me, its the waiting for the results after that. Its all finally sinking in & I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't worrying about getting more bad news.

  • Hi Eileen I will definitely tell the anesthetist. My Mum had surgery before Christmas & forgot to mention her shoulder problems and she is still having trouble with it. I went to the physio today and they have stirred it up so will definitely be telling the docs tomorrow
  • Paulan I had a mastectomy on the 10th Feb & have had a full tear in my shoulder since July ( waiting to see a specialist for the shoulder ). I mentioned it at the pre admission clinic & it was decided they would pack me full of pain killers & my shoulder felt really good after the op.

I have to have an axillary clearance on the 9TH March & they are going to give me the same treatment.

I would mention your shoulder to the anesthetist & hopefully it wont be too bad for you.

Wishing you well with the surgery.

  • That's good to know Brenda/ I will make sure I tell them though.

  • I did ask what positions I would be in during the surgery, would they tilt me to my side or would the arm be pulled overhead but no, you are left flat on your back and the arm out to the side so it shouldn't injure your shoulder although just being unmoved like that for a time it could get a bit stiff.

You might not be doing any wheel chair races with the shoulder any time soon but I am thinking perhaps the regular movement of it might actually help a bit toward the drains they put in and get it healing faster?
