1st Chemo - Day 5

Hi All,

So Friday i had my first session of chemo and the worst part i found was not knowing what to do how to fix it and make it stop...

I just kept feeling worse and worse in the stomach until eventually i was sick and i felt a million times better so next time i wont be fighting hard to keep it down...

I had really bad reflux which went day 4 completely but i was given tablets to take so i can only imagine how bad it would have been if i hadn't have had the tablets...

I am tired alot and cant sleep alot... Last night i dont my longest sleep of 4 hours what a relief it was waking up looking at the clock to see i actually slept for longer than 30 mins to an hour...

Now the nurse told me prior to chemo to try and stay away from small children and pets as they carry most germs... But my dog is my baby and dont know if i can do it without her... She is 50kgs and still growing to reach 80kgs but she is my baby and is being very gentle... She is kept in the backyard at the moment or in the house and sleeps in our room on her bed (she was meant to be getting kicked out but much to my husbands disgust haha i just cant do it at the moment) She is bathed once a week so she is clean that way does anyone have any advise???

They say each chemo gets easier is this true?

I am on FEC so anyone who can give me more of a heads up on what to expect next would be greatly appreciated...

  • Hi Elisha,

It's the germs you have to stay away from - other people and kids might be carrying them.I think they say pets because if you get scratched then you are more prone to infection(no white cells to fight it)My cat never scratches so she was fine.I was super careful with first chemo and didn't leave the house.

However,I got sore gums then a raging temp.and ended up in hosp.on an antibiotic drip in isolation for 4 days.Chemo had dropped my neutraphils to near nothing. If placid,I'm sure your dog is fine .You just need to be extra careful when it comes to people.Don't take any risks.

  • Hi Kath

I completed 6 cyles of T/C in Dec and I can tell you that our dog (only 25kgs) continued to sleep with us the whole way through( he has a bed next to my husband) and I kissed him like I always did plus we went walking every day I felt able. He was great company in the house and I serously don't know how I would have got through it all if his wetnose and big kisses had stopped. I did get neutropenic after my first cycle but I had no infection so go figure!

On the hair thing I had short hair and it was still messy. The whole house was carpeted by my hair so got my husband to clip it all off and felt great (I was looking like a crazy zombie woman with tufts of hair all over the place) Don't shave it as if you nick the skin you could get an infection.

Good luck with the rest of your chemo if you're having radiation it's a lot easier that chemo!

  • I found it a lot easier to shave it off when it actually started to fall out, as I was leaving a hair trail all over the place and it was driving me mad. Just wait til you're ready, Elisha, don't push yourself,  Kath :)

  • Hi Kath,

The general statement was made stay away from children and pets i didnt ask her if that meant my own pet because i was scared of the answer :o/ but yes like you said they help you get through...

Hmmmm Pretzels thats what i feel like now haha...

Yeah i want to shave mine before it falls out just need to do it when the time is right i thought it would have been easier to do but its not  :o)

    xx

  • Nice to get your comments of your experience.  I too am preparing for the unknown of chemo.  This is my second round of BC but I did not have chemo last time.  I am off for radiation starting on 14th Feb.  Most likely start chemo late April.  Please keep on posting your experience as it is very helpful to myself and of course many others. I'm sorry I can't help you with your questions but I do know from my friends that they say "take the drugs" - to stop the nausea.  Take care and enjoy your good days. XLeonie
