Anyone else too scared to drink alcohol!! I never drank a lot, but when we catch up with friends & I watch them all having a few, & relaxing, I feel so left out

- Doin_itMemberThanks ladies. Yep, I think you’re right. Enjoy in moderation. Hugs for everyone of you xo
- Kiwi_AngelMemberI know all the facts with carcinogens but I haven’t changed my lifestyle much since BC. I believe that it’s luck/genetic makeup. Yes, we can do things to help or hinder our chances but I refuse to live my life under a cloud of “what if”. I’m going to enjoy every minute and if the worst happens and the dreaded disease comes back at least I will know I enjoyed every minute and won’t regret not doing things. Everyone is different though.
- _Millie_MemberMy Grandmothers never had cancer, lived to their 90s, drank alcohol, lived a high fat high salt diet, probably considered outside the healthy weight range, at least in the time I knew them.
My parents have never had cancer, are in their 60s, drink more than me and have been exposed to elevated levels of pesticides and herbicides, are outside the healthy weight range.
Yet I drink moderately, eat well, live in a clean environment, am at the lower end of the healthy weight range and get cancer at 42. I figure it’s a fate thing. Enjoy the time you have. If you enjoy alcohol, or some other vice, do it in moderation and don’t beat yourself up over it. 💕 - Kat09MemberThis is really tough and I'm on the everything in moderation bus. My cancer has returned and yes I did enjoy a glass or 5 of wine prior to my 1st diagnosis and enjoyed a similar amount before my 2nd diagnosis. I enjoy having a glass of wine after work or with dinner , I never drank while I was having treatment and am doing the same now. The studies are scary but we do have to enjoy our lives and there are many women out there that have never indulged in alcohol and still have had cancer ( secondaries also ). I currently indulge in San Pellegrino with lots of fresh lime in it, but am really looking forward to 2 Sundays away when I can have a glass of wine with dinner after this round of treatment is over. My Oncologist who is a complete teetotaler ,who doesn't even drink coffee says 1 or 2 a week is more than ok.
- Doin_itMemberI’ll be really peeved if they discover later on alcohol doesn’t cause cancer!! Enjoy Fiji @Milly21 🥂
- Milly21MemberI used to drink quite regularly before I got cancer .I love wine, now I save it for if I’m out for dinner or an evening out, if out I will have about 2 glasses of wine,or I might have a glass on a Friday night,I’m actually used to not having much now and do feel better but it was an adjustment at first.im going to Fiji soon for a couple of weeks and will probably have a drink if I feel like it within reason, but your right before when I had a drink I never thought about it ,now it does have a level of guilt for me too,
- Doin_itMemberThose drinks all sound delicious ladies 😋. I think because I tend to lack courage sometimes, a few glasses gave me the strength to join in. Time to toughen up 😉
- SisterMemberMy favourite softie is chinotto as it's not overly sweet and has a more complex flavour than most, along the lines of wine, etc. Big bad with sugar, though.
- kmakmMemberI have cut back a lot, but am not teetotal. I am surprised by how much better I feel without it, and when I do have it I enjoy it more. However I still torture myself with guilt...
I recently heard a doctor on the ABC that the medical/science community now think that there's no safe level of alcohol consumption. It's been linked to several other cancers, including bowel, liver and mouth & throat cancers.
The problem is booze is a ridiculously central part of Australian culture as you perfectly demonstrate. You feel left out. It's crazy isn't it?!
I still think I need to drink less than I do, and I don't drink much. Gargh!
My current favourite drink to have when I'm not having an alcoholic one is a Garden Tonic. It's tonic water with a tiny bit of elderflower cordial, a slice of cucumber, a sprig of rosemary and a squeeze of lemon or lime. It's so yum, and that slightly bitter tang of the tonic gives a slight illusion of it being alcoholic! - primekMemberQuality of life I say. I refuse to let fear rule me. I don't drink daily but I do indulge when I really feel like a drink or out to dinner.
