Skin changes post radiation

After radiation on my left breast I noticed a large 15cm bruise like mark on my back (same side as the radiation treatment area).  My radiation oncologist didn't believe it had anything to do with my radiation and she suggested I use a topical steroid cream to see if it clears it...it didn't 😒 I tried an antifungal cream as it is a little itchy however this also doesn't seem to be working.  I was wondering if anyone had experienced such an issue?  I understand my immune system has taken a hit and quite possibly it's just an immune response from treatment. I'm just perplexed as my breast skin didn't change at all post treatment.  Thanks in advance 😊

  • Thanks arpie and Christina_BCNA for such sound advice, most appreciated 😘 I will take myself off to a skin specialist for review as it's now been 2 months and no changes.

Hi motton , I'm sorry to hear about the bruising and skin issues you're experiencing, that sounds very uncomfortable and would be difficult to manage on your back. As the oncologist is saying it's likely not radiation related, I would agree with arpie that consulting a dermatologist might be the best next step, or even just your GP to get the ball rolling sooner. Please let us know how you go with this, I hope you get some relief soon!

  • Hi motton   I've never heard of that happening to anyone before ... I am sure your Rad Onc will be keeping an eye on it - and noted its current size, to see if it gets any bigger.   How long ago was your treatment?

Could I ask how old you are?  I've got a bunch of funny things across my tummy in various sizes (that are raised & dark in colour - she gave me a name but I've forgotten it - just age related!) I've also had a large mark (thumbnail size) appear near my right eye in the last 2-3 years ... my GP says it is an 'age mark' .... it is like a gigantic freckle!  No itchy or scratchy bits tho ... just weird.
She also did a full body check for cancers, so I will be starting that nasty cream soon that will turn my face beetroot red & scabby soon ... YUCK!

If you continue to be concerned, maybe get a professional/dermatologist to give an 'all over body check' - even with an accredited skin cancer clinic?  Our skin is like a blotter - it can take 'so much' before it is supersaturated & the skin then erupts!  ....
I am in my 70s now - and used to get horribly sunburnt as a kid living in Qld ... and stuff is only appearing on my skin NOW!

Take care & best of luck xx
