Disappointed in The Beacon's name change
Hi All
It's been a long time since I posted. I've been thinking about this, and watching to see if anyone else commented on this. I don't know if somewhere along the way I've missed something. Was there discussion or consultaion about the name change to Pink Lady? I feel that it's diappointing, and disrespectful to our male members, after all, men do get breast cancer too, And as an organisation, I thought the aim was to be more inclusive, not less.
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts

I think the survey is a great idea. I would like to think that the wording of the survey asks the question about if they feel men would feel included with this name change. Yes ...many many people are still unaware that men get breast cancer and careful wording of a survey to lay out options to include all members is crucial.
Many surveys can be worded in such a way to just encourage people to just agree as they don't give alternative choices or reasons people might not feel included. I'd like to think this won't be done with this survey.
Thanks again. Kath. - June1952MemberThank you, Christine_BCNA-CEO for finally putting a more reasonable response on this post.
Let's not muddy the waters with logos and marketing, let's just address the issue of the magazine name change.
Hopefully the survey will be simple so those who have not been on-line will know what is behind the survey. - RomlaMemberThanks@Christine_BCNA_CEO having a voice in the organisation that represents us on issues that are flagged as important by many is all that is being asked - I too will accept the majority outcome.

Thanks for the head's up Christine. I would support a survey as long as the cases both for and against the name change will be clearly put to members. Since it's not fair to BCNA to mount the no change case, I propose a committee of interested BCNA members be formed to write this text based on similar word counts and/or formats for both the for and the against cases. - ZoffielMember
Thank you for that, Christine. It's a fair and democratic response which will give a result that I, for one, will accept. Marg

Hello Everyone,
Thank you again for your feedback and comments.
I don’t want you to think that not hearing from me since my last post is a sign that I haven’t been thinking about you all and the points you have raised. I am always keen to listen to the voices of our members.
While there has been more than one concern raised in this thread, I’d like to return to why this conversation started – the change in the name of our magazine from The Beacon to Pink Lady.
It’s clear from this forum that some of our members feel strongly about this change. As a result, we have decided that we would like to hear from more of our members about this, as we know not all who have read this thread have commented. There are also many more BCNA members who are not users of the online network. In the coming days, we will share with our 120,000-strong membership a survey regarding the name change. We will post the link to the survey here as well as on our social media channels so you can have your say. We will also email all our members inviting them to take part.
Finally, I would like to say that there has also been a lot of talk about BCNA’s logo. This is a bigger issue. Logos are a very important part of a brand’s identity and over the past 20 years the Pink Lady has become synonymous with the work that BCNA does and as a result we will not be changing our logo in the near future. The initials ‘BCNA’ are not easily remembered and many people know us as the Pink Lady organisation.
We look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the magazine’s name and I encourage you to take part in the survey.
Warm regards
Christine
P.S. If you have just joined this conversation and missed my original post, you can read it here.

You said "I believe people on this thread get this, management either doesn't understand, or doesn't want to know. They'd prefer we went back to making the BNCA forum a success and they'll run the charity as they feel fit."
You have said what I have said earlier in this thread a few times actually, I believe the same, they are happy for us as Members to RUN this Forum, even lead Groups voluntarily of course, whilst they are paid employees and will handle the rest their way.

BCNA made a good start last year in promoting awareness of male breast cancer and have pretty well de-gendered the text of the website. 'Women' has been replaced by 'women and men' or 'people'. Unfortunately there is much more work to be done to raise public awareness levels that this is a man's disease too. Moving forward, the biggest obstacle I see is to break through the whole pink thing and somehow present some blue into the marketing equation. We need some extra effort after years of discrimination, because too many men have died after presenting late for medical help due to believing they couldn't get this disease.
I know there are marketing minds out there that could solve this problem and I've suggested to BCNA that they pose this dilemma to an ABC Gruen panel and see what comes out of this. - RomlaMember@Summerhill38 and @traveltext looks like@BCNA needs a reboot and refresh in many areas if they are to stay a viable not-for-profit.
