Breast cancer myth
It continues to bother me that some well intentioned people perpetuate the myth that 50% of breast cancer could be avoided just by exercising. This notion makes my blood boil!

I absolutely agree @Romla I think its fantastic for managing symptoms, side effects and emotionally...there are so many benefits...and encourage everyone to do something be it walking or riding a bike. I walk 10,000 steps a day and ride an exercise bike, I love being active, I always have been, unfortunately it never prevented me getting it the first time or the 2nd pfft or many, many people I know.Romla said:I accept your point but want to comment that moderate exercise has been an enormous help to me dealing with side effects from hormone therapy and generally helping me deal emotionally on a daily basis with having had breast cancer and the fear of recurrence.I have never been keen on exercise in the past but I am now.I walk daily for an hour sometimes two and belong to a gentle stretch and balance class which I attend twice weekly. It has added a lot to my wellbeing.
That's my bit haha!!! off to ride my bike ;) - iserbrownMember@melclarity making sense in your post. Good to see you back!
Take care x - Doin_itMemberYep, I’m with you @melclarity
- melclarityMember@"Patti J" I'm going to be REALLY careful here, as you have bravely put this post up, I have done so previously to get a barrage from the forum which partly led to my leaving 3 months ago. So I see you are being a little heard... :/
I agree with you for what it is worth. I've always exercised and I advocate it if anyone goes back through my posts. BUT...as some have said its been huge in rehabilitation for symptoms etc., BUT...it doesnt prevent BC. I've always said EXERCISE because it makes you feel good as does diet...don't do it because you're adamant it will prevent BC...I've seen too many people disappointed.
Not touching this again lol, tends to cause a frenzy LOL. - kezmuscMemberSeems everybody but the scientists know what causes it and are more than happy to tell you how you did it to yourself.
Here is the "guilt factor" we spoke about a little while ago. The "what did I do wrong to get this?"
If all the reasons they give out "caused cancer" that in effect would mean no fit active, healthy eating person would ever get cancer right?
No body wanted this or asked for it and trying to find a reason will do your head in. - arpieMemberWhat a STUPID comment, @"Annie C" - you really CAN'T cure stupid! :(
I've never taken any notice of the 'sugar thing' purely for that reason, Kate ..... even oil/fat breaks down to simple sugars eventually (tho it has roughly twice the number of calories/Kilojoules to 'regular' carbohydrates - which you just need to keep an eye on!)
My theory is: Everything in moderation - nothing to excess - and that is both with exercise AND food. Too much exercise & if you don't eat enough, your body WILL break itself down to get that required amount of 'energy'! (That will never happen to me - I enjoy my food too much! LOL)
There is no point cutting anything specific out of your diet as we need a diverse diet to fuel our body - meat, carbs, fruit & veg. The best thing is to eat more home cooked meals - stay away from heavily processed stuff (like convenience meals - whether packaged or frozen.) Fresh is best. (Tho I cheated on the weekend & bought a precooked lasagne for Keith over the weekend whilst I was away.) ;) - iserbrownMemberLots of reasons for BC, not all are obvious and even when you are in the middle of it all they still can't give you a definitive reason as to why. Exercise is good for all and helps cope with recuperation. We all struggle with if you did this or didn't do this...……..there was a discussion on the ABC radio last night, Dr Darren Saunders
- kmakmMemberI was briefly troubled by the sugar thing too @Marakesh. We can go in crazy circles over this stuff, looking for 'reasons'. The thing about sugar is that every cell in your body is fed by sugars. And whatever you put in your body will eventually be broken down into a simple sugar that your cells will use. If you don't eat processed sugar your body will breakdown other fuels, carbohydrates, protein, body fat etc. Obesity is a risk factor for BC and several other cancers, so reducing sugar intake to reduce the risk of cancer is a good thing to do. But gosh, there are plenty of very overweight people out there who never get cancer. It's risk reduction, not prevention. If only we could be more definitive about these things. Sigh. All the best, K xox
- MarakeshMemberI had a work colleague once say I wonder if you caught it due to stress at work ? I didn’t respond because I thought what a bizarre thing to say !! But it did get me wondering if I “appeared “ stressed while doing my job 🙄
Now I’m more bothered by all the claims about sugar . I can’t win!! - AfraserMemberI was not a great fan of exercise - I had a pretty active lifestyle but ...now I find it weird if I have to miss regular exercise sessions. is it saving me from cancer? No idea. But I feel good doing it and it doesn't put on weight, damage my liver or mess with my head, so I'll keep doing it.
