Newly Diagnosed

Hi In January a had my regular breast screen, and later received a call back saying that there was a change in my left breast since my last screening 2 yrs ago, and was required to go back for a 2nd screening, ultra sound and possible biopsy.  To say I was slightly scared is an understatement... So I had the 2nd screening and biopsy and the results came back with an Invasive Ductual Carcinoma HER2 Low Grade 1, and I'm scared.  I'm booked to see the surgeon next week and resolved to be positive until then.  So far, so good.  Would love to hear from anyone in a similar situation.

  • Irms I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis.

Mine was in September and the first weeks felt like I'd been put on a dark train with the curtains drawn and I didn't know where it was headed. I had to trust the people working the train knew what to do and where to go.  Little by little the curtains opened so I could see the world, announcements occurred to let me know what stations were up ahead, sometimes the train slowed to a crawl, sometimes it sped up, but the journey has been steady.

    My diagnosis was invasive breast carcinoma: ER+ PR+ HER2-, grade 1, 10mm.

If you haven't already, start jotting down any questions you have for your surgeon. My list was ridiculously long but he dealt with all of them with kindness including "Are you the person who's actually going to operate on me?" which I asked halfway through the appointment.

I'd also recommend taking someone to the appointment to provide a second set of ears and support.

If you haven't already been referred to a McGrath Breast Care Nurse, you could search for one on the McGrath Foundation website, or ask your surgeon. My surgeon gave me a card for a Breast Care Nurse so I contacted her. She provided a lot of information about surgery, recovery, and helped sort out appointments.

In the lead up to surgery I reached out to a few people I knew who had been through breast cancer treatment and they shared information that steadied my nerves. I also read a lot of information on BCNA and here on the forums - if you do, remind yourself that there are a huge variety of experiences so be wary of getting lost in the details when you're only just starting to find out more about the specific treatment that you will receive.

I had to stop myself getting too far ahead of myself and take things one step at a time.

If specific questions come up, the people on these forums are amazing. I've learnt a lot.

Resolving to stay positive is a beautiful approach.

I wish you all the best with your appointment and upcoming treatment.

      Hi Moomincorn

Thanks for the welcome and great advice.

Yes I have started making a list of questions, and have seen the local McGrath Breast Cancer Care Nurse.  She was fantastic and able to answer some of my questions and provided some helpful advise for when I meet the surgeon next week.

After going through "Shock & Denial" (stage 1 of the 7 stages of grief), I'm trying to be positive until I see the surgeon, but some days it builds up as it's not something I ever thought would happen to me.

I'm doing lots of research and making notes to prepare myself.

      Thanks again for your advice.

  • Irms   I am so sorry to see you joining us here.  Moomincorn has some wonderful info in her reply - I'd also suggest you record all your 'early' appointments on your phone, so you can go over it later on at home as it is almost impossible to remember everything that is said at the time.

It is highly stressful & upsetting in the early days of diagnosis - so if you feel a bit overwhelmed by it all, give our Helpline a bell on 1800 500 258 for a personal and private chat xx.

Here's a list of questions you might like to go thru, to put to your surgeon xx

Also, consider listening to Charlotte Tottman's Podcasts on her own experience with BC - she is a specialist breast cancer Counsellor - and was surprised at her own reaction to the news, when she'd been counseling others for many years & thought she 'knew it'!  She has done 2 'seasons' ... check out the 1st season, right from her diagnosis onwards and how she coped. She is very easy to listen to & you'll probably recognise your own reactions in many of the podcasts.

Check out this thread too - as there is a lot of info on the forum & what to take with you to hospital - even 'tick sheets' that you can fill in to take with you to your appointments on your mental & physical health .... this info has been gleaned from many of our members over the years ... I hope it helps you xx

      Hi Arpie

Thanks for the welcome, great advice and research tips.  Will definitely check out the podcast.

The list of questions you provided is helpful.  Only have some of these on my own list.

      Thanks again for your advice.
