Visit from medical oncologist

Very pleased to be getting ready to go home from hospital this morning. One drain came out yesterday - wasn't as painful as I thought it would be and much relief afterwards. Other drain comes out this morning.

Trevor Maldon came to see me last night and talked about the various drugs used to treat BC and mine in particular. Most of it has gone over my head but there are some bits I've remembered with Tim's help. Always good to have a second person listening!

New bit of news - my cancer is oestrogen receptor negative. Treatment would have been easier if it had been positive cos then they can just block the oestrogen. So different drugs needed.

Still unknown is whether I will need Herceptin - find out in a week when I see Dr Kollias again. All this means is the drug, frequency and length of treatment will vary.

Chemo starts 3-5 weeks after surgery which is right around the time Kirsty's baby is due - depending on whether or not she has a Caesar (still breech at the moment with a foot up by the head). Dr Maldon will help determine when to start.....

  • Thank you, Leonie. Yes grandchild number 3 due about the time my chemo is due to start. My girls and their kids keep me positive ad looking forward to sooo much!

  • I see in a separate post of yours that you have some chemo questions. My advice is to concentrate on your present recovery and the rest will follow on. We all lead such busy lives don't we. I note that there is a baby due. A grandchild?? Babies are such wonderful distractions. So much happening for you right now. I have learnt to slow down - do what I can - engage others to help when necessary- and go with the flow. My diagnosis (both times) was hormone positive. Drugs to assist are good - side effects are not so good. I'm sure you will know soon what "potions" will work for you and you will feel much more relaxed about it all. Best wishes to you XLeonie
