Port update. I went in for 1st round of AC today. Came home very sore and without having had it. Intense pain flushing the port, no blood able to be drawn from it. Second try with new needle and local cream. More pain. Xray to check that everything is in place properly. Nurses given go ahead to proceed. Steroid drip caused more pain and almost immediate and extensive swelling into the tissue above the port. Finally, everyone in agreement with my husband and me that something is obviously very wrong and the oncologist deciding that the port must have disconnected somehow. So close to having the AC injected directly into the tissue. It didn't happen and I can only hope that the nursing staff would have realised before they got to that stage. My husband had the uncomfortable role of advocate, observing, challenging and generally being a polite pain in the bum until it was conceded that, yes, the pain was real and not just anxiety (although to be fair, many of the tears were anxious ones as well as pain).
I go back on Thursday to have the port tested with dye and (probably) have the AC through a cannula.
