Side effects and percentages not disclosed RE radiation
I feel annoyed after going back to breast surgeon yesterday with typical symptoms for breast cancer, inverted nipple, thickening behind nipple and spreading under and outwards & unusual appearance in hair follicles and an abnormal green yellow colour of my nipple. Add this to breast being sore, red and hot. I can’t raise my arm full length and ribs are very sore.
He tells me it’s fine it’s the effects of radiation,
ok. I HAD to have radiation but chose not to have chemo as the side effects and percentage chance of damages vs the percentage of cure was 1.5-2%.
But the percentage gain of the cancer not returning was approx 10%+! BUT when I spoke to people with bc they talked about side effects of radiation like neuropathy, lymphodeama & then read this article and I’m incensed I wasn’t given these numbers and seriousness of the side effects.
the percentages I was given were the chance of this cancer returning in ten years. The “radiation-induced second cancers” were never mentioned
This ONE paragraph blew me away:-
Radiation-induced second cancers
According to a long-term study of more than 600,000 cancer survivors by U.S. National Cancer Institute researchers, an estimated eight percent of second cancers were attributable to radiation treatment for the original cancer.
It was only a 10% difference for BUT an 8% chance against second cancer AND no mention of side effects being so serious and high percentages. Grrrrrr
