Radiotherapy

Hi Ladies,Just wondering if anyone can share their thoughts on where they went for radiotherapy. I'm wanting to go public because private is going to cost to much out of pocket. I live in the north eastern suburbs so my closest hospital will be the Lyell McEwin. Has anyone had theirs there and can let me know if they were good. Otherwise I'll drive into town everyday.Vanessa.

  • what can I say !! shes a lovely lady with such a calm demeanor. I always feel calmer and more positive when I leave her Office. She doesnt make you feel silly or lss ..oh I cant think of the expression ...you know you feel at the same level ..not a mate but respected as an equal. No question is silly with her and I didnt feel rushed at all anytime.  She comes highly recommended for me, cheers

  • Thanks for that Vanessa. We are on the same wavelength. My daughter is 10 so would rather they were gone than risk it coming back. Ended up having lumpectomy on advice of Dr but really wanted a mastectomy.

  • Wow what surgeon did you have. I went through Dr Bochner at St Andrews and was lucky not to be charge anything, I only got charged for my first consult. She was really good. She also works at the RAH.
  • Hi Vanessa Yes, we just said there was no way we could afford $1600 and can they help people who are having financial difficulty. I wish I had thought to ask the same question of my surgeon when charged a spurious $600 booking fee on top of all the usual charges! But we have spent more than $600 I think on radio because that didn't include the initial consultation apparently. Next time I would be bolder and ask re bulk billing. Good luck! Sam - yes that sounds like a great idea, will help the next lot of ladies coming through!
  • Hi Karen and Vanessa,

I love the way that sometimes all it takes is a simple question to find out so many new things that most of us don't know!

Maybe we should also start a thread in the "common" blog area about "things that you may not know unless you ask" ?

I hope you get to negotiate something good Karen & sorry I cant shed any light on your question as I didnt have any radiotherapy.

  • I've been going to St Andrews for my Chemo, I was going to go to South Tce for the Radiotherapy but they said $1600. How did you negotite? Is it as simple as just asking. Thanks Vanessa
  • Hi Vanessa. I am half way through radiotherapy. I was going to go public due to the cost, but managed to negotiate out of pocket costs of $600. I think they may even bulk bill. I go to the adelaide radiotherapy centre on south terrace. Although saying that I am sure the treatments are probably the same, maybe less waiting around with private. Hope it all goes well for you. Karen.
