Radiation Therapy public vs private

Hi everyone, I have recently been diagnosed with DCIS High Grade and about to undergo a second surgery at a public hospital to extract more tissue via a re-excision.  My question is how to go about deciding who to go with for Radiation Therapy which has already been recommended to me by my surgeon. I have heard about this decision tool called DCISionRT that Genesis Care provide which basically determines whether radiotherapy will be of benefit to me.  I wanted to see if anyone out there has any experience with this company, the good the bad or the ugly or otherwise any general recommendations of where to go for radiation treatment in Melbourne.  I am not so concerned with cost at this stage more general experience.
  • Hi Clancy
I went through Genesiscare in Albury, which was my only option.  They bulk billed me so it didn't cost me anything.
    Good luck with surgery x

Hi @Clancy, thankyou for recently joining the Online Network. While you await more shared experiences from other members, you may also find the My Journey article helpful (below) that touches on DCISionRT:

  • Hi @Clancy
I had my mastectomy at St Vincent’s Private  in Darlinghurst and then 28 sessions of radiotherapy at Genesis accross the road from the hospital.
Most of the cost was covered by Medicare but I recall the out of pockets were about $2,000.
I had a good experience and my radiation oncologist was my favourite of all my Doctors ( all were great) and the staff were caring and efficient  and the facility very modern .
I was able to schedule the appointments to a time that suited me ( important as I was still working part time) and never had to wait for more than a few minutes.
I know many ladies have their radiotherapy in the public system and are happy with that too.
  • Hi @Clancy -  I can't help re the DCISionRT that Genesis Care - but I DID go public with both my medicinal Onc and Rad Onc and they were exceptional ... no fees .... and I always saw the same Onc, except when my Medical Onc was off on maternity leave ....

You can read up (or send a query) DCISionRT here:

All the best with your decision making xx
  • Hi @Clancy I had my radiation done as a public patient at genesiscare at Frankston private hospital, which was my local one. Don’t know about the test you were talking about. I did not have to pay a cent, even for parking as there is some on street parking outside.
They were very good there so can recommend them.
    Hope that helps. X
  • I don't know about that test, but i didn't have DCIS. I trusted the first opinion I was given. I haven't regretted having R/T. I feel like I have thrown everything at my cancer.
I had all of my Surgery and Chemo in the private system. R/T was via the public system, at no cost.
    I didn't find R/T difficult.
If you go ahead with R/T get a quote before committing.
    Good luck with your choice.
  • @Clancy I don’t know about the cost side of things but my mum had radiation at Genesis over here in WA and the staff were wonderful.

I’m going to be having mine in hospital as a public patient but am feeling pretty good about them after my appointment with the radiation oncologist.
