Radiation - Which creams?
Hi all,
I've been a frequent visitor to this helpful & informative site & now have decided to post.
A quick run down : Routine biennial screen through Breast Screen WA (family history), f/up required, core needle biopsy, diagnosed with ICD, Left breast. ER/PR+, Her2 -. My lump not palpable!! Wide local excision, hookwire & SLN Biopsy. 10mm, margins clear. 0/3 Lymph Nodes. Mirena IUD removed. Bilateral breast reduction (Being a H cup & having a 6 o'clock lump position is not conducive to radiation!!) Mild lymphoedema in left arm. Arm compression sleeve. Radiation starting next week to be f/up with Tamoxifen.
Tossing up between using QV Intensive cream or Moo Goo Udder Cream, not sure which will better to minimise damage to my reduction scars. Sampled the Mepitel dressing however I developed a rash. Grateful to be using the DIBH technique which has just started in WA. It's only available to private patients so we'll be out of pocket quite a few $. Looking forward to starting the Cancer Council Exercise classes in a couple of weeks & to meeting others in the same boat.
Never thought I'd avoid cancer, just didn't expect to get in my 40's! Hoping to get through radiation without too much drama/fatigue & that my lymphoedema stays under control.
Cheers,
Orchid

Hi Kim, thanks for your info. It's been great to receive feedback about everyone's experiences. I've had difficulties in finding a cotton bra to use. I haven't come across a post surgery/cotton bra that fits my small back as yet.Tried putting on the cotton sports (racerback) from Best & Less, Kmart, Cotton on etc. but look like a pathetic contortionist! Have been wearing the B&L / Kmart Seam free crops which are comfy, but they're not really suitable for hot weather or radiation treatment. Have purchased some bamboo crops online which are great for wearing at home or sleeping in, but don't have any padding or enough coverage, so I wouldn't feel comfortable in using them in public. Might have to use hankies in my seam free crops!
Feeling fatigued & having radiation burns really sucks. I'm glad you're recovering & starting to feel better.
Forecast is for 42C on Monday! There are too many stingers at our local beach at the moment so will be enjoying a tepid bath at home instead ;-)
Cheers x

Hi Adean,
I love the idea of the mans hanky! Hope it didn't take you too long to recover from your burns.

Hi Orchid,
i used moo goo the hospital supplied me, one thing lucky about being in the country. It was not until the last week of 24 treatments that the burns became a problem. my nipple was weeping and struck to my cloths so make sure you have some dressings. All cleared up 2 weeks after treatment. But I have only just got back to wearing a bra. I visited my physio who recommended a firm fitting sports bra with no under wire, which is impossible to find!, to reduce fluid in the breast around tumor site. I thought I was healing well but radiation flares things up a bit. All the best be kind to yourself. I was very tired after treatment finished and am only feeling like I am functioning now 6 weeks later.

After the treatment I used a large freezer gel pack on my breast to cool it down then I used pure aloe Vera, I also used a crystal deodarent, and pure sorbelene soap. I used to apply the cream and then put a large mans hanky over it . I did burn at the last 5 treatments unfortunately. But surprisingly it did not hurt good luck adean

Hi Emma,
Thanks for your tip. Glad it's all gone well for you. I'm doing my classes south of the river in Hilton. Looking forward to it as my Mum will also be using the gym at the same time. She attended the classes last year & really enjoyed it. My Mum's been breast cancer free for a few months now! She's defeated it twice!! One breast was hormone + & then 6 years later the other was triple neg. She's been my inspiration & has been very supportive of our family!

Hi Karen,
I'm glad the QV is working for you. It was recommended to me too. As you said, if one product doesn't work it can be changed as required. I'm glad your treatment has gone pretty well. Have you finished rads now? Thanks for your support.

Hi Ady,
Thanks for your reply. I'm trialing both products at the moment & will have to make a decision by Monday. I'll be on the lookout for the Moo Goo deodorant. Wishing you all the best for your radiation treatment.

Thanks Maryrose. I'm trialing both products at home & I'm still undecided. The QV was recommended by my Radiation Oncologist, however I'd read so much about Moo Goo. I'll make my mind up by Monday!
