Port removal: general or local

Had mine out with a local, no sedation. I just couldn't stand another bloody IV.

  I've got a great breathing and counting technique that I use in those circumstances. Despite me telling the theatre staff not to talk to me, there was a constant parade of women popping their heads over the blue sheet getting in my face, telling me how well I was doing. Completely screwed up my numbers...
In the end I reverted to factory settings and snarled 'Will you all shut the fuck up'. Offended silence. Other than that, it wasn't too bad and I could drive myself home an hour later.

Hi @Feathers, I had mine taken out under light sedation and all went well - seems to be a good middle ground. Best of luck with your procedure, it's a great milestone when the port finally is removed  <3

How funny. Someone else suggested sedation as well and after hearing your story I am leaning that way. Thanks for sharing. 

I had done under local with sedation and I was like some drunk who could not shut up. Any subsequent minor surgeries I told them to give me light sedation as I'm a pain in the arse. It was fine though. No pain but just constant chatter I knew was annoying but seemed unable to stop. Lol

Done and dusted. No more poison and no more surgery. Now I just hope and pray BC stays away. The good side of it all, is that I understand a lot more due to some of the horrors so I am able to help some of my new friends I have met during treatment a bit better. I had to deal with some pain trauma issues for awhile, but that rarely rears it’s head nowadays.

That sounds appalling. How awful for you. 

I still have pain where they inserted the camera. That was two years ago. To be honest, I think it was the “I don’t care if it hurts” attitude of the doctors. Their job was to get the thing in, not make me comfortable. I was sobbing the whole way through. They just kept saying “ You’ll be right”.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. I had mine put in under general but experienced pain for weeks after. 

I had mine put in under a local. NEVER again.
