Not my coffee taste gone!

Day 5 after chemo, Tuesday. It’s a warm day today and my temperatures up a little due to a sore mouth and throat. Since everything tastes like metal, even coffee I contribute it to a killing off of taste buds. I hope this doesn’t last as I really like the taste of my coffee. I managed the dog walk this morning just fine so my stamina is still hanging in there. I do it twice a day for half and hour but my lads might have to take over if I get low. The trouble is, the minute they let them off the leads, the dogs want to run back home to me, Mum!

  • I can still drink coffee. Its just that I cannot taste much of it. My throat doesn't have an infection I don't think, its just like dragon breath. Last night I could have sworn smoke was coming out of my nostrils.

Us dog owners have it in spades. I clipped mine before chemo so they are short haired to not pass on bad bacteria when I pat them. We'll recover much faster with a dogs love.

  • Hi WarrierPrincess, Brenda

Sounds like my chemo journey is close to yours as well! My first AC was the 15/1. I gave the cap a go but couldn't stand it... so I guess I'll go bald (like my husband :) )

Brenda have you tried fruit tingles? I haven't needed yet but apparently they work a treat to combat the "metal" taste in your mouth.

I've been ok, a little tired and very thirsty but apart from that not too bad (fingers crossed). Haven't lost taste yet but have noticed I can tolerate a lot more heat (spice) than normal!

Also hoping not too much rain as my dogs and I are missing our morning walk.

    Em xx

  • Hey Brenda,
Sounds like our chemo journey's are only a few days apart. My first AC was on 12/1. I gave the DigniCap a go. It's bloody tough going, but if it works I'll probably tough it out. The first few days are pretty blah, right? I don't think I have ever ingested so any fluids in my life! Hope you didn't need a trip to the doc for your throat. Mine is a bit sore today too. So I need to be more vigilant with the salt water mouth washing.
If I don't get out for a walk with my dog today, we are both going to be cranky pants. So let's hope there isn't too much rain about. XOXO
PS. Real name is Kelly. But I need to keep the Warrior Princess close by ??

  • Hi Brenda, hard to believe you can come off coffee without withdrawals, but i couldn't stand it for 3 months. For some reason when I changed drugs mid-treatment to Taxal then my taste buds returned & coffee tasted SOO good. Just a thought, sorry, it's the nurse in me talking here, maybe talk to your Onc about the probiotic - it is made from "healthy" bacteria but if you get mouth ulcers there is potential for infection. Good on you for keeping up the exercise ?? Tracey

  • Ugggghhhhh I love my coffee too and hated that chemo took it away. I'm 5 wks past lady chemo and can again enjoy my coffee :)

  • Brenda may be a good idea to book a doc appointment today if you can, get on antibiotics as quick as you can if needed. chemo complications don't always stick to a schedule unfortunately

    Look after YOU

    Cheers Sue xxx

  • Keeping a close eye on it but my temp has gone down a bit now. A good tongue brushing and rinsing and gargling with salty, bi-carb water did the trick and a little bottle of probiotic bacteria was just lovely on my tongue and throat. I am hoping its all on the mend now.

The nurse thought it would be about 10 days before my cells would be at their lowest and I have to go in for a blood test at that time. I will be suitably decked out with mask and gloves and sleeves for that one so I don't pick up any colds or flu.

  • Hey Brenda good to see that you are feeling ok day 5.... but just want to let you know that I thought I was having mouth/throat sores and hot flushes but was actually tonsolitis and temperature due to 0 neutrophils which happened after my 1st chemo.  If not sure just go to your GP and get checked out.

    Good luck, Chriss xx
