- Cath62MemberHi @Dazzle, yes the place i had radium treatment used the mepilex. I went to genesis care but many other places use it too. I heard that strata xrt is effective too. I also agree it can be emotional at the end of radium. For me that was the end of the active treatment ie surgery, chemo and radium. I felt exhausted, it had been back to back treatment and exhausting so it was emotionally on the last treatment but really exiting too. Best wishes with your treatment.
- DazzleMemberThanks @Julez1958. I will definitely ask for similar or same. Thanks for your support as well. Hope you have been going ok.
Cheers - DazzleMemberThanks @JulieZ
- Julez1958MemberHi there
i didn’t have any skin burning as I used strata xrt but I did get very fatigued towards the end and for a couple of weeks after ( I had 28 sessions) .
I usually host my family for Xmas lunch but as I finished in mid December I told my sister to book a restaurant for the family for Xmas day ( great idea as it turned out).
Some ladies also get a bit emotional at the end as it is often the last treatment ( after surgery and chemo).
Take care , you will get through this 🌺 - DazzleMemberHi @Cath62 where did you get mepilex? Is it offered at radiation sites
- Cath62MemberHi @Pommy8, I have larger breasts. I moisturised my breast lots in the lead up to radium treatment.
I used mepilex during the radium treatment. It's like a second skin and it stays on the whole treatment and for a couple weeks after. It can rip but the nurses can do repairs and patch it as the treatment progresses.
Some people don't like it as you can't get it wet but I think it was fabulous as o really didn't have much of an issue with burns. The only place that was a bit burnt was my lymph node scar. That was a bit raw.
Post treatment I moisturised heavily too. The little sore area i had healed quickly. I was swimming in the ocean 2 weeks after my radium finished. Good luck with your treatment. - Pommy8MemberWhats the best prep before and during radiation therapy for larger breasted woman pls.x
- MicheleRMemberHi @T_sun42,
Thought id check in to see how you are going. Maybe i was a bit hasty in saying no emotional reaction. I finished and now the fun has started.
Im in a bit of pain, blisters, cranky. Today i went to nurse and burst into tears when she said id hit peak at 7 - 10 days following treatment. Im at 4 days post treatment and not feeling too flash.
Hope you are coping alright.
Michele - AbbydogMemberI had a good run with 20 sessions of Radiotherapy, and felt little change in myself, only slightly tired.
We are all so different. You have got so much to cope with. And all so unexpected ie the diagnosis and treatment plan.
You are young, single and have children. A lot to consider and it must be stressful.
I hope that you have some good friends, family and possibly a Breast Care Nurse. To talk things over with and help
I had a Mastectomy, Chemo and Radio, now on Letrazole. I'm 62, have no dependants, good family and work.
I didn't have a lot to consider, but myself. I had a relatively easy run with treatments.
See if you can do a few things that you enjoy. Talk, read, swim, sit in the sun. Whatever you can manage.
Cut yourself some slack. We are all allowed to be in a bad mood sometimes.
And maybe radiation has an effect on you.
We are all different. You will get through it. - noosa_blue150MemberI’m day 15 of 20,days of radiation, and have the tiredness. Emotionally ? I have to,agree with others - you’ve been through the mill with surgery and having to make tough decisions re treatment . I find there’s days when you feel on top of everything and then there’s days when you wonder about it all and what’s coming . I don’t put it down to radiation I just feel it’s a consequence of all that’s going on to us. Hope you have supports to help, out and chat to . I still, worry about side effects of chemo and radiation, but I have rationalised it as a path I have to take to beat this disease . If down the track it should return at least I know I tried all the options I was given. It’s a hard call, and I respect others decisions .
