New here - hello all

Hi everyone, Im new here as of today. Id like to ask a question about oncotype test if thats ok? Has anyone here benefited from it? Im set for chemo week after next but am wondering if I should do test, Im second guessing everything at the moment.
  • Hi @suzie64, I has the EndoPredict test done and it advised that chemo was not recommended.

My layman's understanding of these tests is they look at information in the tumour that indicates if it is likely fast or slow growing. Chemotherapy works by targeting rapidly multiplying cells (hair, nails, many cancers). So if you have had a slow growing tumour, chances are chemo won't 'see' any stray cancer cells, as they won't have rapid activity.

I was a 'textbook perfect' candidate for the test. No node involvement, hormone positive only, very low Ki67. It is definitely not recommended for everyone and has quite specific guidelines about who the test is recommended for. It was $3,000 (no Medicare coverage) but paid for itself as it meant I didn't need more time off work once my sick leave was all used up.
  • @suzie64 welcome to our network as June1952 said the search bar is very useful for getting a look at previous discussions on a variety of subjects
i do believe the test is not cheap and it takes a couple of weeks for results to come through.
You didn’t mention what type of breast cancer you have and what treatment you have had so far
after your research the decision will be easier. Also question your medical oncologist about it as well.
I didn’t do much research when i was diagnosed i was mostly in shock my daughter asked all the questions and took notes i basically did as i was told. Through the whirlwind of being diagnosed.
Hope you find the answers from others on this site
Are you Kensington Melbourne or Sydney
  • Hello @suzie64 if you go the the top blue banner you will see a Search function.  Put in 'oncotype test' and several conversations will come up.  That will give you some reading and you can add any queries to those ladies.  Hope that helps to get you started.
